I thought this was extensively discussed before if you search in threads.

"walk around" lens are discussed every day. I prefer a 17-50 2.8 on a crop for walking around photos

I have to second the opinion of the many people here who have supported the 15-85: it is a great, versatile lens whose only shortcomings are its slow aperture and the lens creep.

Like dark tiger, I have the 24-105 on my crop (50D) as a walk-around lens and love it.

24-105 atm

If canon ever release a EF 24(or lower)-200(or higher) at a nice compact size.
I would jump on it in a heartbeat.

On crop sensor I would go with the 17-55, its just versitle. I always felt teh 24-70 was too long but that my style.

I've been very pleased with the 24-105mm as my "walk-around" lens on the 7D. Versatile, excellent IQ and a nice range. When I want a wider angle, I reach for the EF10-22.

If you are considering going FF, just get the L lenses now and be done with it.

I've used the 24-70 f/2.8 and the 24-205 f/4, and love them both on my 7D. I've been using the 24-105 a bit more due to the reduced weight and longer focal length. Yes, it doesn't go to 2.8, but I usually shoot at f/5.6 and higher anyway. IMHO you can't go wrong with either of those lenses.
