I'm an old film shooter from way back and the Mamiya RB67 was what I used in the studio. LOVED that beast, it was a real workhorse. Have fun with it!

About the cost of film 120 or 220 processing.... I certainly don't think it is expensive. $20 developed and scanned at medium size 18mb per photo for a roll of 120. Obviously, you don't shoot medium film like you do with a DSLR. Would you go through more than a roll in a week as a hobbyist? Do you have that many places you really want to shoot?

Film isn't that expensive at all, it just tends to add up. I still get amazed when I take out my old slides, there is something about film that I still deeply love. And you're right, shooting with film, and even more so with medium format I assume, requires much more thought and planning. That's something I actually like.

Like I said this is just something to have a little fun with!

And as far as if he knows the value of the camera....he definitely has an idea from looking around online. These are going for about 300-500 on eBay without all of the extra accessories. I'm hoping to be able to get it all for around $500 or so.

I went on ebay a little tipsy (mistake), bid on two (mistake) and won them both. That said, my goal was to slow things down a bit, get back to basics, and hopefully develop some more skills that will help in my digital photography.
It's easy, when shooting a wedding, to rattle off 1k shots, chimping and knowing that I can fix certain things in photoshop.
My goal with film, is to shoot b/w, develop the negs in my bathroom, and scan the negatives with a flatbed/negative scanner. Knowing that there's no "rapid-fire" with an RB, It makes me slow down, use my meter, compose properly, and click the shutter. It's an awesome sound that comes from an RB when that shutter drops. I even challenge myself to scan the negatives with the "info" band at the top and bottom of the negative (where the film type and picture count is), and in order to do that, you need to get the composure and especially the horizon correct. One more way it's making me think before I shoot. Many times on a model shoot I'll use mostly digital, but some film.
I figure it's just under a dollar a shot. Film is 4 to 8 bucks a roll for 10 shots. Developing chemicals makes up the rest. I'm liking rodinal, but d76 is good too.
As for your kit, I'd say 350 tops.
Enjoy, and keep us updated....

^^ That's hysterical. Happens to me, without even a sip.

Congrats on the camera! PS eBay is my go-to place for film. I wouldn't buy anywhere else.. You can get a great deal buying in bulk from some of the sellers.

I've never even thought of buying film off of ebay! Thanks I'll definitely look into that. So you don't have any trouble with the film being expired or stored incorrectly? I tend to buy from places like B&H because I assume they store them properly and replenish their stock.

As long as they aren't expired, they should be fine. People put them in a freezer in order to prolong their expiration date.

You never know the condition before you purchase it. Even when it's delivered, it sat on my my porch for 3 hours in the sun before I got home. If I ever get good enough, maybe I'll notice the difference.

FYI, expired films, depending how long it has been expired, will have color unexpected color casts. Some people like it and considered it experimental.

UPDATE!

I bought the whole set for a very reasonable price! I can't wait to start shooting with this. I think I have to repair this back though before using it. I know the foam has degraded so most likely there is a lot of light leak. I picked up a Polaroid back and just ordered about 20+ rolls of film! Mwuahahaha

My poor 5D2 will have to take a back seat for a while... :D

20+??? Have you calculated the costs to have developed and scanned for all of them yet...? :) You will be surprised how much you want to or need to save each shot. If you feel trigger happy, go grab your 5d2.....
