Take a look at an average, real world situation: 4 security cameras and a 1 month retention policy for the video footage so that the footage is available for later review.

30 days times 24 hours/day is 720, times 4 cameras for a total of 2880 hours of footage. That's a big bunch of disk space even if you are only storing at 720p, let alone 1080 or the kind of feed that a 29MP camera can deliver.

right, but I think many businesses erase footage after a couple of days

At most places that need security cameras it's at least 1 week. There are many cases where a theft could go unnoticed for a few weeks so it's important to have longer retention times.

Or the suspect could have cased the establishment a week or so in advance with no suspicious clothing.

Bingo, I support some DVR products sometimes at work. Basically it's storage related and one other thing... a lot of places have DVR (digital video recorder) products that won't take the new digital IP camera's inputs...but only coax, analog stuff. Businesses are broke these days, all over the country, and sticking with what they already have. IP cameras are getting more common, but I'd bet that the VAST majority of security cam installations are analog coax cameras.

Nah, usually footage lasts a week at the very least, sometimes people have stuff going back a month or more. If they only have footage going back a couple days, its' because they messed up and set it up wrong (this happens more often than you can imagine, oh man)...

If set up right, it'll often be set to record lower fps and quality at night but then motion detect or alarm boosts quality, etc.

But it isn't going to be like the movies where you can find someone stealing something quickly. If there's a theft that you don't spot until a week later...good luck going through that footage. Yeah. Lot of places won't bother unless it was a felony at the very least. A break in or something that just happened is another story, if you know the time it's no problem lol.

Depends on the item. I was recently visiting some friends who own a garage when some parts that had been on backorder showed up. When the mechanic went out back to get the customer's van that had been waiting on them, it wasn't where he thought it had been parked. We checked the security footage and it turned out that some repo men had come by with a tow truck at 2 am the previous week.
