Relative to creation, no, relative to a fruitfly's life, simply ancient.

All that matters is that it still works and does what you need it to. If not, then it may be time to upgrade.

You seem to emphasize "video" capability so ask yourself just how much you need that ability. The 40D can take great still images so video seems to be your main desire.

Get yourself a 17-55 or a 15-85 and your "old" 40D will feel rejuvinated. It is a very capable camera body.

I just upgraded from a 400D to a 40D. The 40D is the best thing ever created!!!!!!!!!

(in my world anyway)

Yes it is getting some age on it. I remember well when it was introduced, what a camera. And you know what? It is still a good camera.

I have one for my backup, and I am glad I have it. I went from an XTi to a 40D and the difference was amazing to me. I mainly noticed AF locking on so nice and fast, and the size/feel in my hands compared to it little brother.

I will say this. The jump from the XTi to the 40D seemed like a bigger jump than the jump from my 40D to the 7D.

By the way, I have video on my 7D and haven't used it in over a year. No interest in it really.

I agree big time on the 17-55 f2.8. I had a karate event to shoot last weekend, and I ended up using a couple of my primes. That is the first time the 17-55 has been off my camera in months, and I still used it for most of the shoot (1023 pics).

I would not want to be without this lens for a cropper.

In technology terms, yes, it is old. In useful terms, no, I bet it still provides great images even today.
