35 all the way.

And about the distortion - if you don't see distortion while taking headshots with 35L then… maybe it's time to shoot with smething else to see the difference :)

Cheers!

Back in film days when zooms were 'iffy' unless you spent megabucks, I started with a 55mm f2 on my Pentax. I quickly moved to 28mm f2.8 which became my standard walkabout for at least 15 years. It suited my style.

I've now moved down to the 24 1.4 which I like even more. But 24 is not for everyone, and I find 35 too close to 50 on a FF. So yeah, as someone observed, a 28 1.4 would be really good, but I can't see it happening.

How's the sharpness of 24 2.8?

It is very sharp. See the first chart on this page:
http://www.lensrentals.com …imes-why-did-they-do-that (external link)
Not quite as sharp at f/2.8 as the 24L or 35L are at f/2.8, but it is certainly sharper than the original 24-70 zoom. At f/4 it compares very well with the 24L and 35L except in the corners.

I think it's a good solution as I find the L lenses are just too big for carrying around on vacation.

24-105mm f/4 L IS

Best walk around vacation lens :)

I know you said prime...but on vacation I do not want to change lenses... and the 24-105 gives me the versatility that I would want on vacation...

A question I have is are you outside majority of the time? dark indoors?

I've really become fond of the UWA 16-35Lmk2. f/2.8 is fast enough for outdoors and "might" be adequate for indoors. I used that primarily on my last vacation in Alaska and supplemented it with an Olympus OM-D fitted with a leica/panasonic 25 f/1.4 (equiv to 50mm on full frame). Incredible combination both UWA and normal prime with extremely shallow dof.

If your indoors most of the time the 24L will give you a cool slightly distorted look when upclose to the subject/object. If your outdoors most of the trip 35mm is wide for alot of applications.

I see no point using a prime that is f/2.8. If thats the case you might aswell take more weight and use a zoom with more versatility. If weight is a major concern alot of photogs are using the smaller camera systems for casual use with high iq (fuji x1, x100, olympus om-d, and other small interchangeable camera systems)

I like using my 35L but the 24Lmk2 definitely is my choice for a walk around with my family (or my 16-35L). However to answer your question about 1 prime on a full frame for your application I'd probably choose a 35L.

I took the 24L II to Vegas and it was all that I shot with. It worked out very well (for what I was doing).

35L is my favorite, mainly due to the focal length, and 95% of my work with it is portraiture. If I want anything wider which for me is more landscape stuff or large group photos, then I usually use my 17-40. I had the 16-35, but went back to the 17-40. First I would choose the length with which you plan to do a majority of your work, then fill in from there.
