Here in Montana we don't usually get much for Autumn colors but this year has been the exception. This was taken on October 15th around 6:45 PM. Not long after the sun went down. I love all the blues that contrast so well with the fall colors.

Beautiful. Are these the result of 5D Mark III in-camera HDR?

Thank you. Actually no, they're both single shots; it's probably a result of some quick processing. In the first one, the shot was too bright, so I brought down the highlights a bit (probably on the 2nd shot too) and lifted shadows. I actually wondered of the 'shadowy' image was better, since my friend was a bit silhouetted. I'll probably revisit them and maybe try a lighter hand with the processing for a more natural look.

Thanks for the explanation. You make me want to go back to Zion. It's too bad I can't go at this time. I hope fall foliage can still be seen in late November (Thanksgiving weekend) but I won't get my hopes up.

Well, you never know. My shots were up at the Kolob Canyon/Reservoir area, much higher elevation than the valley floor; probably just past peak by a few days. In the valley itself, there was almost no yellow at all, everything was still almost all green. If I had to guess, I'd say sometime over the next 2-3 weeks would be peak, so you may be in luck.

I visited Zion last year, 11/17-11/23 and just missed peak in the valley by a week or so, but still got some nice color. Might want to check Zion's webcam (external link) to see if the colors are changing. Most of the trees in front of the Towers of the Virgin will turn yellow.
