k.a., you absolutely kill it with the manual focus lenses. Do you use a focus screen to help?

absolutely. i don't know how anyone could reliably focus a fast lens (<f/2.8) with the stock screen. i had a focusingscreen.com screen on my 20d, and the canon ee-s on the 5dc.

there are lots of tricks to manually focusing... i find myself often using other visual cues in the scene to really dial it in. for example, it's MUCH easier to focus on specular reflections and other glinting light, like a catchlight in an eye, or a reflection off a pair of glasses. after a while you start to "read" the distance of various objects in the frame and use them as distance cues. continually racking in/out and watching the plane of focus pop in/out is also important... i find creeping up on perfect focus to be nearly impossible.

Nice pic She got a fatty! Lol I'm really new to manual focus but it seems like when you get real close to your subject and you hit the maximum focus limit where you cant focus no more and you start backing up I find its easer to get what you want in focus that way does anybody use that trick..

Hi all!

Recently I purchased this lens (Samyang 85mm f/1.4 IF).

However, I am not bit confused with the differences between the first version and second version of this lens. Second version is available only for Nikon (Samyang AE 85 mm f/1.4 IF UMC Aspherical). Second version comes with newer coatings, and focus confirmation for Nikon. Now I don't really need focus confirmation, but I am now interested about the newer coatings. So now I am wondering would it have been smarter move for me to buy the Nikon version with Nikon-EOS adapter instead the Canon version (1st version Samyang)...

So my question is:
the second version (UMC) has new coatings for this lens. However, does there exist any tests comparing the 1st and 2nd version of this lens? I mean are there differences in optical quality? UMC has better flare control? Is there difference in sharpness?

Thank you for answering..And I tried to do a search here and from Google, but did not find answers to my questions...
