Whew, glad you said this. I have an 8gb card and I usually take around 2000 shots at a meet. And I need to format it then, thank you!

Holy overkill Batman!! I have never taken 2000 shots of anything, even over the course of a weekend tournament of soccer, basketball, volleyball, football, airshow, wedding... never. How many end up getting deleted?

You would have a much better time in post using something like lightroom.

Lightroom +1

Amy you can get lightroom for $99 using the student discount (i.e. your daughter) or PSE10 for $79. Check it out. That's how I get my software, so the kid finally saved me some money for once. You can download the software free for 30 days until your software is delivered that way you can begin playing with it.

Ok, maybe I'll just stay in AV tomorrow at the meet to be safe and play around with manual at practice and by the next meet I can do as you say here. I will change to JPEG + RAW though for tomorrow for sure. Very helpful!

so this was 5 days ago you said this...
so how did the meet go and whatcha got for us? ;)

Well, I've tried my hand at this again for the new competition season and I feel like I am still missing the mark.

I sent my Canon 40D in to the shop and borrowed a 7D with my little 85mm 1.8. I used the 1.8 at 1/400 and 1600. I actually forgot to set white balance so it took whatever manual setting was on it.

I had a hard time figuring out focus points on this camera but I think I did what I usually do and picked the top one to try and focus on the face. I wasn't very close at all so this shot is cropped and I have been using LR to get rid of noise but it just doesn't look sharp at all.

I have had two hard drives go out on my iMac so I haven't tried RAW...afraid I will eat what little memory I have left. Any thoughts? Does it look like I focused on the leo?

Thanks!
~Amy

One I would change f stop to 2.5 to give you more DOF. And find a way to shoot RAW.
How much are you cropping?

Are you using one shoot or al servo?

When shooting sports (football, basketballt), I usually have the focus point on the body -a bigger target for me. I think it may be a bit harder to focus on the face if she is doing lots of moving about. The photo doesn't seem really sharp to me, but I'm at work on a crappy monitor, so I could be wrong, or it could be too much noise reduction at work.
