If I were to buy a brand new camera with all warranty paper intact from another photographer, without the receipt, would canon honor its warranty? Also, if he has the receipt but it is under his name, would canon honor its warranty to me?

Let me know. Thanks!

I can only say I bought a used 1D Mark III and soon after I got it it wouldn't take a shot. I sent it in and it was a warranty issue and they covered it at no charge. In this case it was a known problem with this model.

Canon service center usually requests an original receipt from an authorized dealer.

Without receipt, they charge every fees.

Technically speaking, the service center needs a receipt, from an authorized dealer, in your name, and the warranty is non-transferrable.

Practically speaking, most of the time they'll service it even if it's not in your name, although I have heard stories of warranty service being rejected in this case.

Receipt can have someone elses name and Canon will service gear under warranty. You just have to let Canon know that its a gift.

Here is my warranty guide - http://www.1kindphotography.com …ra-and-lens-warranty.html (external link)

"THIS LIMITED WARRANTY SHALL NOT EXTEND TO ANYONE OTHER THAN THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER OF THE PRODUCT, OR THE PERSON FOR WHOM IT WAS PURCHASED AS A GIFT, AND STATES YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY."

Its would be rejected if the original owner had the gear previously serviced or they mailed in warranty papers in with original owners name on it.

Just curious:
what if I have the receipt but lost the warranty card?
Is a blank warranty card required?
Thanks

Somewhere in their verbiage it states the warranty covers the original purchaser only. It's not transferable! That doesn't preclude them from honoring it at their choosing but don't hold your breath.

I don't remember but I might have read that someone sent in the blank warranty card without receipt and Canon serviced the camera under warranty.

Read the warranty again which I have posted a piece of it below...

Most times they don't even ask about the warranty card. The receipt, if anything, is the most important.

Correct, submit a copy of the receipt and you're good. I just did this last month and I did not have a problem with warranty work, even though the receipt had someone else's name on it. Here is the email I received from Canon when I asked them prior to "having the prior owner" ship the lens:

Warranty does not pass from one owner to the next either. For warranty service, the original owner or person listed on the invoice would need to be who sends the lens in. They can choose to have it returned to any address they want after the repairs are done.

So, the "original" owner mailed the item to Canon and then chose to have it shipped to me upon successful repairs. See, no problems. ;)

Cheers,
Laurent

why don't they simply make the warranty transferable like Sony/pentax?

Because its not a good business practice. You open yourself up to multiple facets of false claims and loopholes. You also are thereby encouraging people to buy on the secondary market which provides you with no direct profit (maybe some indirect advertising) -- unless that dumb law proposal goes through.

You could theoretically transfer the warranty for the existing period (say like how Mack does), but again, there are a lot of loopholes and techniques for bending the truth. Simply stated, it limits liability and the need to put man-hours into arbitrating or investigating. They can then be a "good guy" every once in awhile when they approve it out of consideration as a "one-time allowance" as they like to put it.

Howdy,

Funny, I never thought about having my warranty card or receipt with me when I took my T2i into the Canon Irvine Repair Center to repair the pop-up flash/hotshoe sensor known flaw. It was within the warranty period and all they did was look-up that I had registered it online right after I purchased it from Costco many months before that.
