Although I am a "newbee" I am attempting to design and publish my own image gallery website. Once the design is finalised, is there a reputable free or inexpensive website hosting service that I can use. There are many advertised but none have been recommended to me as yet. I notice that many threads here are promoting new websites and wondered how you decide on an ideal host.

I've never found a completely free website that's been able to do everything I want it to.
I signed up to SmugMug (just before the price increase) and I'm incredibly happy with my decision, it's not overly expensive but does take some getting used to but the YouTube tutorials are a fantastic.

Zenfolio is another you can check out.

Also, I signed up to 123reg and got my .co.uk domain for £6 for 2 years. Overall I've spent very little but happy with the results.

Hope this helps

Nothing good is free. But inexpensive, that's another story. Get yourself a GoDaddy account, get a domain name and you're off to a good start. Setup WordPress on GoDaddy and you're off to a great start. Spend $89 on Photocrati and you're golden.

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.
You're a ghost driving a meat-coated skeleton made from stardust, riding a rock, hurtling through space. Fear Nothing!

I agree that nothing good is free (with a few exceptions) - Godaddy hosting is not very good in my experience. I like having a full Control Panel and Godaddy does not offer cPanel by default, I believe it's a paid add-on. I installed wordpress on a client's server who was using godaddy and their interface is not what I would call good at all.

Their hosting is also not the cheapest around (or the fastest) so I would avoid it, although many people do use it. I've used hostgator for hosting and the speed was good and included cPanel, but I was not a fan of their customer service and left them for GreenGeeks, who I've been with for the past two years. The service has been pretty good and the speed is great. I think new customers can get a year's hosting for something like $65. You can find cheaper, but I like the features they offer.

Be sure to read the TOS of whichever host you choose - some (like BlueHost and other Utah based webhosts) have very strict content rules which prohibit any content that includes nudity of any kind (even fine art).
