How do you know that there research did not find out this was the most preferred lens.

Just because you don't prefer does not mean a greater percentage of respondents did not either.

I would be surprised if this lens was in the top 10 most wanted lenses of 1% of forum members, Canon enthusiasts, or photographers in general.

Still, I agree with the sentiment that questions why this lens would even be on Canon's radar. There are a lot of other lenses that should be getting higher priority. Updating the ancient 100-400L for instance. Releasing a 14-24 and a 200-400 for another instance. A 35 f/1.4L II for yet another instance.

We can't assume that at least some of the other products you mentioned aren't in development (or getting ready for release, in the 200-400's case) at the moment. It could be the case that some are, but only word of the 24-70 IS made it to CR.

With no 24-70 costing less than $2300 in Canon's lineup anymore (mkI is discontinued) why not put out this lens? Or should Canon just concede all 24-70 sales to 3rd party makers? At least they'll have an offering. The 24-105 f4 doesn't get mentioned when people are looking at 24-70 choices, but I bet there will be plenty of threads popping up of people asking "Tamron 24-70 VC 2.8, 24-70 2.8 mk11, or 24-70 f4 IS??"

It seems like Canon's new design philosophy is to see how much they can get away with in terms of cutting back features on new products. Sometimes they introduce new things, but it seems like they always come with a caveat.

Here's our new entry level full frame camera! It has a nice sensitive center AF point, which is good since it's about the only one you can use.

Here's the new G15! It has an all new, much bright lens! I hope you weren't getting accustomed to that flippy screen though, we took that off to make the camera "smaller."
*snort*

And now, the new 24-105L! Just... slightly redesigned.

as I said in another similar thread, this lens would make a lot of sense for studio shooters. A LOT.

it'll be priced at 2300.... compare 70-200 F4 IS vs 70-200 F2.8 for price cues

Would you expand on that a bit more? Why would studio shooters prefer an f/4 IS over an f/2.8 non-IS? Just curious. :)

I wouldn't doubt that such a lens (f4) would be prime-sharp. When I'm in the studio I generally shoot between 5.6 and f/8. I also keep my shutter speed at around 125th a sec.. Image Stabalization would mean I can get tripod-like stability without the tripod.

Canon obviously couldn't deliver an all in one package to satisfy the field shooter that wants F/2.8 *and* keep it light/compact enough to satisfy the average consumer (with additonal IS built-in). The trade-off is a split lens senario where aperture speed is lost for 24-70 user that doesn't want distortion from a 24-105 range but needs premium quality and sharpness... the studio, for example.

Thanks for the nice explanation; it makes sense. :)

I was really dead set on getting the 24-105L for my general purpose and studio shooting purposes, but this is interesting. I'd be interested in this lens if it:

*has superior image quality over the 24-105L (sharpness, distortion at 24mm, etc.)
* is lighter than the 24-105L (IS doesn't really add that much weight)
* is priced similar to the 24-105L.

I think Canon are really being stupid now if this is true, what is the point of a 24-70mm f/4.0 IS ? I would so much prefer if this was a f/2.8 IS

EDIT: There is a 2.8 IS in prototype, but I still don't see the point in 4.0 IS

It's the knowledge of the existence of that prototype that makes me believe that Canon's lens engineers are being hamstrung by the marketing/accounting department. (Which I guess is the purpose of an accounting department)

Rumor as it stands: EF 24-70 f/4L IS at $849 and weighing 545g

Quite a bit cheaper and lighter than the current 24-105 if true. Most probably a good match to the 6D. The rumored price point and weight makes the lens more sensible than it initially seemed.

Anyone think it might be the 24-70mm f/4L IS + another Cine lens? ;)

I wonder if they'll drop the 24-105 4L IS, I love mine and would find that to be odd.
