My setup is not nearly as elaborate as others here, but it is very different alternative for macro work. I am fairly new to photography, so all I have is a T3i, 18-55 IS II, 50mm f/1.8, an cheap extension tubes without electronic pass through. I had seen people taping 50's onto the end of other lenses to simulate a macro lens, so I tried it, but I found it awkward with my 18-55's rotating focus ring/front and different filter sizes. So I set up the 50mm on the desk, aimed at the corner of the slot to open the lid of my laptop and tried shooting though that lens with the 18-55mm, handheld. It was surprisingly successful. I was able to set the camera to AF Servo and just keep moving closer until the lens wasn't able to focus any closer. I was able to get shots focused this accurately about 90% of the time, over the 50 or so shots I took, seeing how close I could get. I know that I could have just used my extension tubes, but that requires very difficult manual focusing with a depth of field of about .5mm and a very low success rate. So I wanted to do something a little different. This was lit by a desk lamp above the laptop. It would have been easier with a speedlight, but I don't have one. When I tried using the built in flash, it produced more lens flare than I have ever seen in a picture. So I just used the desk lamp. The flare was something to see. EXIF data is preserved in the photos.
