In another forum, my findings about what can be done with a Type A camera and a Class 2 (430, 550, 580) flash was being queried. I retested, and amended the compatibility wording accordingly.
Essentially, a great deal more can be done with Class 2 flashes than some think.
I used a 50D in M, 1/200S, f2.8, ISO320. The common flash settings were ETTL, Evaluative, WB Auto, FEC -2/3 to comensate for the black cloth. Three YN-622C were used. All adjustments were made on-camera.
As usual for testing, I took an ambient only shot so that the amount of light contributed by the flashes could be identified. (This "control" technique would have been helpful in some earlier posted images!)
Two 430EX II flashes were set up at approximately 45degrees either side of subject axis. Camera Left: Group A. Camera Right: Group B. A folding Douglas Grey card evaluates lighting.
(1) Ambient only at -2 stops. (2) Ratio 1:1. (3) Ratio 3:1. (4) Ratio 1:3.

(5) Ambient only at -2 stops. (6) Ratio 1:1. (7) Ratio 3:1. (8) Ratio 1:3.

The Other Guide now includes:
Partial control (Class 2)
Set on flash: Flash mode (ETTL, M, Multi); Zoom
Remote control using Flash Control menus: Sync mode (1st, 2nd, HSS); ETTL functions (FEC, FEB and Ratio).
