Yes another "Oh god Kenji's at it again" thing...

I really like what little I've seen from the Sigma 35mm f/1.4, So much so I'm about to list my 28mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2, sell them and pick one up...

...But then a little thing starts to tug at me, Telling me its a really dumb idea to dump $900 on that type of lens for a "mere" crop SLR like the 7D, That such a lens is wasted on a cropper since I'm not using most of it, and I should suck it up and deal with the 28mm f/1.8 or buy another Sigma 30 and see if i like it more the second time..

And then I start wondering if I'm going about this wrong.. Again.. and if I'm merely throwing more money down the drain....

Lets be clear, I know what I want, What I WANT is something like my Sigmalux except wider, I want the look, but i want looser framing to it, I want something fast in the 24-35mm range with excellent bokeh and good contrast and good sharpness and I dont want to pay a fortune for it... It also has to be autofocus, my eyes and the 7D's viewfinder dont do MF very well im afraid...

Now, Of course theres a good answer to this, Dump the 7D, Go full frame, After all, That essentially accomplishes everything I want, I get my Sigmalux with wider framing... Except I am not that interested in a 5D Classic... and the 5D Mark II makes me "ehhh" because of the AF, Now granted, I dont shoot sports, But I do enjoy having off center focus points that actually work and cover a good chunk of the frame, The 5DII I'm concerned will be a lot of focus recomposing.. Which is bad... The IQ would be amazing though I'm sure.. I'm just unsure it would be enough for me

a 5DIII I dont think I can get.. even if i sold the 28mm, 35mm, 15-85 and 7D (Ok I'd maybe just MAYBE afford a 5DIII then.. With all of 3 lenses to use on it..)

And besides, I'm not unhappy with my 7D, I have a few complaints about it sure, But overall I rather like it, I know its ins and outs, its little problems.. I know how to make it work and get the most out of it (And I think I do quite well) and I do like having a bunch of features I'd be giving up (8fps is handy for insects and i like the built in wireless flash trigger) Not to mention getting rid of it for this one lens might make me have to play switcharoo to get my OTHER lenses back in line with what I like....

But then I come back to "I'm going to spend $900 to bolt a bloody fullframe 35mm lens on it" and I start feeling like I'm being stupid or throwing my money down the drain because I am "wasting" the lens by putting it on my 7D

Of course a FF camera is in my future, its just a lot farther away in the future, and I would quickly point out the 35mm f/1.4 would be on the short list of lenses I'd want on a FF body anyways... If anything I'd love it more (I like 24mm on my cropper after all)

I dunno, I've analysis paralysised myself in a hole...at this point i feel i need to do SOMETHING instead of sitting in the hole... (And yes as i said, im shooting, and im happy-ish with the results for the most part...)

Lenses can last a very long time, there's absolutely nothing wrong with adding that lens to your kit if you want it. You're well aware of the field of view you'll be getting by using the lens on a crop body. You're educated on the issue so why not buy it if you want it. Just one less lens you'll buy when you eventually go FF.

I think you mind is already made up :D

LOL actually, I'd love one, its just the 1 series are a bit too big for one role they do (Which is to go in my bag and be carried at all times)

I don't shoot sigma, but for the sake of argument, I'll assume it's identical to the Canon 35mm 1.4 L.

You're having second thoughts because the image circle is too big? If the focal length works for you on a crop, and the lens performs to your expectations, don't let the image circle size convince you that you'd be wasting the lens on a crop. I find the 35mm to be amazing, even on my crop. Who cares if only the sweet spot of the lens is used on your sensor.

Get the lens. Don't over think photography. It's an art.

Reading between the lines, isn't the real question you are pondering "should I get I 5DMkIII, even though it's really out of my budget at the moment"!

Maybe I am wrong; but sorry thats what comes across to me. No offense, I totally understand; I think of the lure of FF pretty much each week and definitiely every time IQ or AF isn't spot on [and Yeah I know in 25% of the cases it would not make the slightest differrence]

Get ff. I know lenses are always a sound investment, but I have spent hours upon hours here looking at camera threads, for my eye, and things I like to shoot, ff is a fantastic upgrade. To this point the price of glass has stopped me more than the body, but I am probably going 6d after the initial price drop.

Everything is relative.
Gear: 6D, Unholy Trinity:twisted: (24Lii, sigma 50A, 135L), and for the other ends of the spectrum, sigmaEX 14mm2.8 and sigmaEX 100-300F4.

Eh, the 6D looks nice but the ergonomics are a bit MEH to me, its basically using the 60D control layout and that is actually a bit -painful- for me to use the rear joypad thingy... Also no more double function buttons... Be a lot of adjusting and I dont think I'd like it and it doesnt address my main problem with the 5DII (The AF spread is roughly the same with 2 more points)

Lawl, you're kinda right, The second thing is, would I miss my 7D if I had the 5DIII

Really though, I'd be down to my 50mm f/1.4, 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro and my 70-200 f/4L IS, Good lenses but also means id be completely without any wide for a while, That would be a big concession i think for FF...

I guess the other way to look at it is im maybe $300 ish out of pocket for the 35mm f/1.4, Thats not really that much money

Of course thats also considering i dont toss my Sigmalux in the line to be sold (im kinda thinking on that.. if 35 and 50 are just too close)

I'm in the same boat, sort of. The 5D II AF/FPS just aren't enough for my wants, and i'd be left with a 50/1.4, 100/2.8, 70-200/4, and 300/4. 5D III is just not even a choice.. far too expensive for moi. So.. i'll stick with crop as long as i can, and buy a case of Beano.. for all the G.A.S. i'm gonna have.

You might consider doing the same. ;)

Looking at your Flickr Kenj I had to go back 6 pages to find something where the limited focus ability of the 5DII may have had an effect. You also have to remember while the 7D has a fabulous system, the 5DII is not as bad as most make out. Have you ever tried one?

^- Haha maybe ;)

I just cleaned up and photod my 35/2 and 28mm f/1.8, Found two TINY REALLY HARD TO PHOTOGRAPH imperfections in the coating on the front element on the 28mm f/1.8 lol... but other than that both are REALLY minty at least.. the 35mm f/2 is actually under warranty still...

Only hesitation is im unsure i have the extra $$ i need to kick towards the 35mm f/1.4 right now, So i might hang on to the 28mm f/1.8 for a lil longer, maybe wait a little closer to xmas and stuff...
