Just wondering if you intentionally have the picture on an angle or not.

I usually try to straighten the horizons, but when I rush through so many pictures I probably miss 10-20% of each batch. Actually, instead of straightening horizons, I typically don't notice unless there's a vertical plumb line in the background (like a fence post or light post).

I went out with a friends 550ex... That 550ex wouldnt recycle fast enough and I may be able to get two shots while in burst mode.

I shoot with (3) 550EX's mounted to the bottom of my monopod. It helps give more reach, plus I can fire off 6 consecutive shots with no problems. And a single set of eneloops will last me an entire game. Much better than having to wait 2 mississippi's between shots and then swapping out dead batteries every quarter.

Just for clarification, do you get more reach from mounting it lower, or from firing 3 units at once? And what is a eneloop? Sorry Im a newbie.

Thanks,
Jeremy

You eliminate redeye by mounting lower. Plus it's less distracting.

I went out with a friends 550ex and it doesn't go past 105mm while using my 70-200 f4. Was there a lot of available light and the flash is just filling the shadows? I didnt get very good results with it.

And do you use another power source? That 550ex wouldnt recycle fast enough and I may be able to get two shots while in burst mode.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Thanks for the link Clarence. So the eneloop gives enough juice to make the flash recycle faster? Is one eneloop used, or one for each unit? Im wondering why some type of lithium chemistry battery isnt used for flash units instead of Nihm or Nicd. They have a much higher voltage and they keep a constant voltage (pretty much) all the way until they are dead, instead of losing power as their energy is spent.

You ARE firing all three lights at once right? Does anyone here use a flash extender?

Thanks,
Jeremy

That's going to hurt^^^.

That could have been really bad. My son who was making that tackle told me after the game he didn't want to hurt that receiver so he held on to him. Had my son gone through him, that would have been really bad for the other kid.

Eneloops are just rechargeable 1.2v NiMH AA's. Nothing magical. If your flash uses 4 AA's, you use 4 eneloops.

Yes, all 3 speedlites fire at once. The second speedlite gives me an extra stop of power (doubles the available light output). I'd need a 4th flash to double it again. Plus the PocketWizard FlexTT5 optimizes the hypersync pulse and gives 1.68 stops more output than standard HSS. So the rig is giving me a lot of light, but each speedlite is working less, so they recycle quickly. I don't do a lot of rapid fire shots, usually just a double tap, but this rig lets me do 6 consecutive shots before the flashes slow down.

I've used a better beamer at a game several years ago. (I'll let you finally practice your POTN Search skills if you're interested in seeing the results.) Bottom line, it works. Works with HSS. Works with ETTL. But since I like to shoot tight, I've found that the flash range works fine when the action is close enough. WIth a better beamer, you're narrowing the amount of area that gets light... this makes the flashed look even more evident... very dark ambient surroundings, but very bright subject. My preference is towards balanced ambient and subject lighting.

But all of this has been covered elesewhere, so search out those other discussion threads and let's get back to pictures here.

Great stuff everyone! Seeing the shots from the 300 - 2.8 definitely makes me yearn for that extra reach! Shots from our varsity team's visit to the dome in Vancouver Saturday. Losing effort unfortunately but a great experience just being there!

The road to the dome:
