back for another season and I just bought lightroom 4. Any advice on how to make the attached photo look good?

Yeah, certainly underexposed. As mentioned before, you need to get some exposure compensation and really whiten the whites. Basically, you want the ice to be as white as possible. For example, look at the ice in my image:

IMAGE: http://www.reicherstudios.com/Sports/HockeyPhotos/IceHogs-100412/i-ftjNRMf/0/L/IMG4172-L.jpg

Also, are you shooting in RAW or jpeg? If shooting in RAW, just use AWB, but if you are shooting jpeg, you need to do a shot of white ice and determine what your WB needs to be.

If you're shooting through glass, you need to take that into consideration, too, as you are going to lose a few stops of light depending on the quality/condition of the glass coupled with the arena lighting.

Try to learn the histogram on your camera, so you can adjust on the fly if necessary. Although if you are shooting in the same arena, and the lighting is consistent, you shouldn't have to adjust your settings very often.

Hope this helps!

I was in your shoes last year. Had shot for a long time but never hockey...

I shoot the same gear you do. 7d with 70-200 f2.8 L IS mkI ...

ISO at 3200. Custom WB off the ice surface. M mode with 1/640" and f2.8 or f3.2...

If I move to shoot the bench, ill crank the Tv down to 1/250" (or as needed at that rink) then right back up again for the action...

The images you have where the ice is ALMOST COMPLETELY gone, with just a hint of faceoff circles or lines, looks right to me...

Im by FAR no pro at hockey (ANY shooting actually) but those seem to get me the best results. Start there and maybe bump or dump (aperture or shutter speed) as needed to tweak ...

I don't know how to PP very well but I still shoot RAW+L. I just concentrate on the jpeg image right now for my final product ...

i am shooting RAW with AWB. I guess my problem is trying to not to go below 1/500 so I don't get blurred skates or stick. I am taking off the extender and will try going back to F2.8. I have tried ISO 3200 but get so much noise. I am trying to get the sharpest shot so I can get a "Fat Head" 48" x78" vinyl poster.

I would adjust the white balance, and also bump up the exposure about 1/3 of a stop.

how can someone from CANADA, not know about hockey???? thats like a Brit saying he doesnt know about cricket, or soccer or driving on the wrong side of the road or shepard's pie, or warm beer lol.....

any comments on making this a better shot.

id adjust the white balance. manual focus. shoot one pic completely OUT OF FOCUS. call it up in the view screen. hit the MENU button and find Custom WB (second red box in while in M). hit the center button on the back wheel. then hit it again for "set". it will ask if you want to use the WB from this image for Custom WB. scroll to OK with the back wheel and hit the center button....

you will have to have the Custom WB selected under the White Balance choice...

Shoot closer so you don't have to crop for a clearer, closer picture. I like to shoot at the end line with a 200 mm lens. Wait for the action to come to you.

Being "from" somewhere and being somewhere are two completely different things. :D
