Don't get me wrong... MAP is bad, but not quite that bad. Representatives from authorized dealers have stated publicly that there is NO issue selling less than MAP, only advertising less than MAP. MAP is literally "Minimum Advertised Price".

You can call up B&H or Adorama and ask for their best price for a purchase today and get verbally quoted prices below MAP. I have personally done this since Nov. 1 when MAP went into effect.

The problem is there is no easy way to comparison shop, so there is no incentive for authorized dealers to lower their prices substantially. The verbally quoted prices are no where near as low as the previously advertised prices, even if they are below MAP.

I, for one, am voting with my wallet. I refuse to pay over 2800. I WANT a 5D3 today and would buy it today. But I don't NEED a 5D3, so I am delaying purchase until I can get the same pricing available pre MAP as a way of protesting MAP.

By myself this will have no effect, but if enough Canon customers refuse to pay these MAP prices the price will go down, since it has been demonstrated that it is possible for dealers to make money at pre-MAP pricing, and there has been no indication that the wholesale price from Canon to the dealers has increased.

I absolutely agree with you. It's nice to have a 5D III but I refuse to pay at the MAP price.

Seriously, if we have around 10+ people, we should pay at most $2700 or even less. I don't know about Canon but I know electronic Dealer makes around 15-30% margin on the MAP price.

Having to say this, who would be a trust worthy person to be a point person to handle all of the cash and distribute the cameras to the buyers?

no need to give anyone cash - to maintain transparency we will make direct payment to the dealer within a said time - lets say a day. Let us make the deal first. Since we have decided on a price we are all comfortable with, let us stick with it. The dealer is also in to make some money.

Very mixed reviews. 50% "good" and 50% "they suck".

If I was in the mix, I would join in on the group buy effort and see how things turn out.

Yeah. It is mostly due to the sucky shipping. Takes anywhere from a week to 10 days.
Their customer service is pretty bad too but the products are as discribed.

It's not really answered because they are not authorized dealers. People who want to buy lower than the MAP price wants to buy from authorized dealers with Canon warranty.

As well as from a merchant who does have great customer support.
Nothing like establishing a relationship with someone as there are more things than a 5D Mark III body some of us will need.
I am surely going after the 28-70 f2.8 II but it will have to wait (MAP and MSRP are just too high).

Just a suggestion, why dont you create another thread with the Heading: Group buy for Canon 5DIII, bet you may get more wanting in on the party = better buying power to negotiate perhaps a better deal than $2800.

my 3 cents

ok guys I had a brief conversation with one shop and the price that he offered without negotiation is around 3K. I will talk to a few more vendors and revert back.
