bought it at 42nd St. Photo, I know the place like to do bait and switch but I took the chance anyway. I bought just the body, the body arrive brand new USA warranty but its on a kit box. I guess they split up the body and lens and sold them separately for a bigger profit.

They aren't an authorized dealer so I think the warranty is void. They are also not supposed to split up kits for resale, but then again they aren't authorized so it doesn't matter to them. You probably wont ever need the warranty anyway, and if you did you could probably talk canon into honoring it. My 5D came from some ebay seller that had 25 of them. I paid $2,500. Chances are if I need warranty service, which I doubt I will, I can talk them into honoring it....

Right but to send the camera in for service they will ask for your proof of purchase, when they see its 42nd street, that is when you might be in trouble...

I would think canon would have to honor the warranty. Only us nuts on forums know all the canon authorized dealers. The average joe walks in a store or orders online just like I do for 99% of my shopping. I have know idea about authorized dealers of any other product that I ever bought except photo gear and never had a problem. Maybe we are over protective. Does anyone know of a canon usa warranty that was not honored because it was not purchased at a canon authorized dealer ?

I cant point you to any. Do a Google search and you find nothing about it. Which means that nobody has been denied warranty coverage and complained online or Canon just honors the warranty, OR no camera has broken within the first year.

Take a look at canons own site about buying from an authorized dealer. It mentions nothing about warranty coverage. Meaning what?

Canon U.S.A., Inc. Authorized Dealers provide the following benefits to our customers:

Comprehensive support for Canon product warranties
Access to Canon-offered promotional programs, consumer rebates and special offers

We recommend that you purchase your Canon products, supplies and accessories from Canon Authorized Dealers who are required to meet our high customer service and support standards.

Please look for the Canon Authorized Dealer logo to ensure the integrity of your purchase:

Better yet, look at the warranty itself. It mentions no requirement that the camera have been bought from an "authorized dealer". It only says the camera must be bought new.

And the fact that Canon "recommends" you buy from an authorized dealer means that you don't have to, but they want you to for all the reasons mentioned above. I think the difference is that you can go to an authorized dealer and they will assist with getting your product sent in for warranty, where if you buy from an un-authorized dealer, you have to do all the work and deal with Canon directly.

"Authorized Dealer" used to mean that X amount of new stock was purchased for resale or that a fee was paid to Canon (or Nikon, Konica, Minolta etc)...

My first job out of High School was a high end film lab / camera shop and we had to order X amount of Canon gear for resale. Nikon just wanted fees. Or both I don't really remember now its been 28 years...

Same with Colt, Kimber, SigSauer, Glock etc...

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed
