So I'm on a fence of ordering a 105VR. Anyone used this lens on here?

I just received mine today. It's the lens that I've always wanted but my interest with macro comes on and off. The next one will be the Nikon 300mm f4 or once the newer version comes out (with VR).

I will be buying the 105VR at some point. Seems to be a great macro lens for FX (and DX I'm sure). Could also double as a head/shoulder portrait lens.

Do you ever have problems doing that kind of photography? Whenever I've walked around with a 'big' camera on sidewalks people act very strange and I had one guy in downtown Richmond tell me not to shoot his picture 'or else'.

I would have just ignored the person which I'm sure you did. If someone politely asks me not to I would apologize and move on. It's much easier to do this in tourist areas where everyone has a camera anyway.

I'm just trying to grow. That's the main reason for my project.

Plus, sticking to the 28mm instead of the 50mm gives my photos a new look. Switching from black and white to color as well. Trying to "see" differently.

Shooting street with a 28mm you really need to get into people's faces otherwise it just looks too disconnected.

Great macro lens but for everything else it is very slow to focus in comparison with other telephoto lenses.

I think I’ll hold off on 105VR. D600 pissed me off so bad with it’s oily/dusty sensor that I’m returning it. RMA has been issued but I asked for a refund this morning...
hope they will refund me because I’m thinking of getting a D800E. If I will get an approval on a refund, I’m ordering a D800E, RRS L-Plate and grip by tonight. Kinda excited...

The D800 suffered the same issues when I had it although I've read on other websites that it has gotten better with newer bodies.

IDK... I’m just so frustrated with it. Besides, I’ve been doing a lot of researcing and a D800E seems like a much better choice.
But eh, those huge 36mp files... The ONLY thing I don’t like. Otherwise- great camera

I agree but as a macro lens, ALL of them are very slow. I guess this is more about precision but I could be wrong.

Those huge NEF files do add up especially if you don't have a minimum 2tb for storage or if your computer is slightly dated. Faster processor and more RAM will make things easier especially when editing HD video files.

I have a 17-55 I picked up at less than half the new price. I'm hanging onto it and assuming that DX is not dead. I see a lot of people dumping them and other great DX lenses on FM dirt cheap. If you know you will stick with DX you can sure build an affordable set of lenses on the FM FS board.

I say that about the DX lenses because is Nikon trying to push the FX sensors on the lower bodies? Say like in 3-5 years from now where can you see the DX format going?

Something I must have missed in other reviews of this lens is this tidbit....

Since the rear lens element moves in and out during focusing, get used to rotating the focus ring to the infinity mark before mounting or dismounting the lens.

i remember Rick mentioned having dust already on his after some minor uses...
