A lot of things go into which of the concept lenses actually gets produced. Don't forget the new 70-200 f/4. For a lens in the range of 55-300mm with a max aperture of f/2.8 I would expect this to be a heavy lens. The 70-300 VR is very sharp from 70-270mm though it is a couple of stops slower. We'll see but I remember someone doing a fairly comprehensive study of Nikon and Canon patents a few years ago and fewer than one in ten patent concepts ever saw the light of day.
I think that the norm, the last really big semiconductor company I worked for paid us for patents. Get something thru the internal patent committee and by the external lawyers we hired to look for prior art and you'd get a check, minimum was $1k. I recall when we needed a hardware RNG in 1999, the software RNG we were using was only a pseudo RNG, and it had to be we owned given we wanted to drop it on our high margin microprocessors. We found one patented in 1986 that had never been used. It had hung around for 13 years and never been touched.
