I am looking for a good monitor to mount on top of my 5D2 but i have heard a lot of monitors have issues when you start recording and the image on the monitor shrinks to the size of the live view on the camera.

can you guys recommend any good monitors to use?

Best, by far, for the money is the SmallHD DP6 or its smaller version the DP4. IMO nothing that costs less is worth it, the SmallHD products are tried and true.

If you want an EVF then I think the Zacuto Z-Finder EVF is best.

I'm currently debating between the DP4 this Marshall unit: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …REG&si=rev#costumerReview (external link)

Seems the Marshall unit doesn't have the bells and whistles but it does have a larger screen. Can anyone tell me what exactly "Focus Assist" is, on a monitor, and how it will help with video?

Focus assist should not be part of the monitor, it should be provided from the camcorder and viewed on a monitor, otherwise it is second hand information.

That stated we just pulled in a couple of the Marshalls and they are decent monitors.

With all these nice, HD, Cheap tablets out there, why none has HDMI or USB video input?

The Android tablets have and there is a Camera Controler app which not only gives you live view but touch screen control at the end of a USB lead. I'm pretty well set on buying one for that feature alone.

John, this sounds like a great idea...Are there any specific models you've heard about?

Just watched this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRWNLSmW3MU (external link)

Since this app uses USB it looks like the video feed is a little laggy. Is there any lag when using standard DSLR monitors? Wonder if this would really work for video shoots.

What a dire video. I can't believe it has had so many hits. It was like "Death by Powerpoint", lets put words on the screen and then read them out aloud.....this does not a video make.

I did see a review on DSLR Film Noob which was somewhat more informative.

Youve gotta do some more research if youre asking that question. The SmallHD DP6 has been industry standard for many years for the pro-sumer to up and coming video rigs. They are built like a tank, offer higher resolution than any of the cheaper models, great support and firmware updates from the manufacturer and offer the tools (peaking, zebra striping, false colors, focus assist) of high end monitors. Even used they are a better route to go. Keep an eye on eBay if the new price is too much to swallow.
