Paolo,

I am really enjoying the 5D3 -- great news about the f8 AF coming soon. I hope they also implement the red AF confirmation on AI servo that the 1Dx received. That would be my only complaint now about the 5D3.

I am still considering the 1Dx. Maybe in the new year. ;)

Zethar--awesome Indigo Bunting shot!

Also, could someone post a non-cropped shot from the 800L from a FF body? I'm curious about the "terrible vignetting" that is often mentioned on FF. Is there any vignetting on an APS-H body?

Lovely shot. A bird I had a hard time getting, but luck changed last year. So the 5D3 will get AF for f8. Man, if that happens, I think the 5D2 may be gone.

Dolina, I use this roller bag (external link) for my 500, but I kinda recall seeing a gentleman use the same model for his 800, which assured me that the 500 would fit. I will try and find the review (check the dimensions). They also carry the non-international version, but the size restriction may be a problem for you when flying (see other link below). Also, check out the other roller bags, too. I've had mine over a year.

Methodical, thanks!

My problem is the airlines I fly are up to 7kg only. >.< All the rollerbags + the 800 would exceed the weight limit.

Thanks,

Here is a shot with 5DIII and 800mm at f5.6 SOOC converted from RAW to jpeg in LR. As you can see there is some vignetting but it has not been a problem for me and it can be very easily corrected in camera or in post.

Paolo,

I have run into the same weight restriction issues and cannot use the roller bags as carry on as they are heavy even without gear in them.

I have been using a Lowepro AW Pro Trecker knapsack to carry the 800mm and 1 body and one extra smaller lens plus extra battery and charger. Any more than that and again the weight becomes an issue.

Zethar your photos want me to cook a lil butterball soon. :)

Tarmac released a new bag called the 5793. The external height (22") and width (9") hits the carry-on limit but its depth (10.5") is under the limit of 14". Wish they made it deeper so I can carry other items too. A tad heavy though at 4.6 lbs. Sells for $200. Fits a double gripped body attached to a 800mm IS with hood reverse

Think Tank Photo created a new knapsack this year called the Airport Accelerator. External dimension is 14” W x 20.5” H x 9” D. This is the closest thing to a perfect bag. Just missing it by 1.5" on the height department. Starts at 4.1 lbs. Sells for $280. Fits a 800mm IS with hood reverse without body.

I was also looking at the new Gura Gear Bataflae 32L. External dimensions is 14 x 21 x 9 inches. 1" short of the airline carry-on limit. Starts at 4.2 lbs. Sells at a phenomenal $450! Fits a 800mm IS with hood reverse without body.

I guess Think Tank Photo noticed the rise of Gura Gear and priced the Airport Accelerator accordingly.

Paolo,

Thanks for the info on the bags. I think I will have a look at that Tamrac;

Many thanks! I don't think this qualifies as "terrible" as I have heard it mentioned. Actually, I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't mentioned it. I can see how it would stand out on birds in flight (against a blue sky) but otherwise I can run it through PP real quick with no real bother.

The Intermediate Egret, Median Egret, Smaller Egret or Yellow-billed Egret (Mesophoyx intermedia) is a medium-sized heron. Some taxonomists put the species in the genus Egretta or Ardea. It is a resident breeder from east Africa across the Indian Subcontinent to Southeast Asia and Australia.
