I've been trying this setup the last two nights:

Not the most ergonomic setup + the vivitar can't be set low enough for the ISO and aperture I normally use. The 540EZ is used for a bit of a fill on 1/64 or 1/128, but it's there mostly for the AF assist.

The setup has two problems. A 1D + flash is quite heavy to carry in one hand all night and some people look at the flash not the lens when taking their picture

I'll probably pull the trigger on some Yongnuo YN-622 triggers (with AF light) + YN568EX flash (but I'm a bit worried about compatibility with older cameras since I use a 1D mark II and 20D).

Hey guys been dabbling in nightclub photography for a few weeks now, just exploring my options.
I think a Gary Fong Lightsphere is certainly on the cards, but I was thinking a dual flash bracket would be amazing for nightclub shots!
something like this:

Does anyone have any experience with a setup like this? Or any other cool flash variations you can recommend? I mean obviously getting your speedlite off camera is a given (I don't particularly like the look myself), but some different setups would be cool to see!

A bit of overkill, I just have an one flash light set up, more than suffice

It's not so much about illuminating the object, but more about the diversity of lighting it offers, creating more depth.
The problem is, with one flash off camera, you get filthy shadows casting on one side of the face. With one flash hotshoe mounted, you get the obvious flat, straight shadows cast.

I think this has potential to be much more interesting...set the flashed up at different powers and different angles, maybe even use different gels.

Maybe you're right, but I've got enough illuminations plus not shadows like you've claimed

Be thankful you guys in the free world have smoking bans indoors. I've tried to shoot on a dance floor here in Tokyo and all you see is an illuminated fog. :|

Never played around with filters or b&w for nightclub stuff... I usually feel its all about the energy which is *color*.... but heres a little go at it.. thoughts?

You must of used a really long exposure for the last one, say 1 second?
