After I installed the latest EOS utility (and I think some Windows 8 update may have contributed), I finally have my 40D and my 5D mark II recognized, but it still won't see my 450D. I only use EOS utility to sync the clocks of my cameras:) Astrojargon began working again for the 5D Mark II and 40D at the same time EOS utility began working again, but again, it won't see my 450D.

Based on EzDingo's report of it working on different USB ports I moved mine from one designed for USB 3.0 to one for USB 2.0. Nothing, still doesn't work.

Guys...just a thought...Go to Device Manager and delete all the usb listings. Then reboot or rescan for hardware changes. This has cleared up several usb issues for me in the past.

Good luck, Paul

A Canon rep suggested, "Uninstall the software, and start again from scratch. Install the utilities off the CD and then update off the website."

Tried it and my 50D now works but no luck with the 5D MarkII. Looks like we are getting closer to a solution!

If this is possible, unplug any USB to SD/CF/micro-SD card readers. I had this issue with the 5d and the EOS utility.

For some reason when my multi-adapter was plugged in the USB port and I plugged the camera into another USB 3 or 2; EOS would not get notified of the 5d Mk III arrival.

I do not know how EOS is written and what API's its based on. But I do know USB stack was completely re-written in Windows 8.

Canon is now aware of the problem and will "escalate this issue and the supporting documentation to our engineering staff. Again, we apologize to anyone who has been inconvenienced by this issue."

Got it to work. Uninstalled EOS Utility, installed latest version. Plugged 5D Mark II in. When screen came up with TAP TO CHOOSE WHAT HAPPENS WITH THIS DEVICE...scrolled to bottom and told Windows to take no action. Opened EOS Utility....now working!

Even on OS Lion, EOS utility keep on crash and restart again and again. I am just using card reader to transfer my pictures. I read somewhere that canon will update the EOS utility early next year.

Got EOS Utility to work by deleting another device

I was able to make EOS Utility work on my system by uninstalling another driver (WD20EARS, an esata disk drive) that was appearing in the Device Manager section "Portable Devices". Then EOS utility recognized the camera. I then right-clicked on the computer icon at the top of the Device Manager tree and selected rescan computer, which reloaded the driver I uninstalled, along with three unsuccessful driver loads for "WPD File System Volume Driver" which could be the key to undersanding the EOS utiilty / Win8 problem on some machines. I then hooked up another camera, a 5D Mark II, EOS Utility didn't recognize the new camera (but the Mark III continued to work). I repeated the uninstall of the WD20EARS disk drive, and then EOS utiity recognized the Mark II camera (and the Mark III still works).

FWIW The esata drive still continued to be readable even when I deleted it from the Portable Devices section.

Also, I got this idea from Ron Hu and user 1S74 who wrote about deleting other USB drivers, and unplugging external USB card readers

strange problem - i downloaded the latest 5dmkIII SW a week or two back when I still had the T3i only - had the same problem with eos utility options from "Control Camera" tab greyed out. Yesterday after my 5dmkIII was plugged in- same problem. I tried playing around - uninstalled the device from the device options menu and after I tried connecting the 5dmkIII again - presto everything started working. Could use eos utility as it is meant to be.

See if this helps.

Starkyrulz

I've already tried this but Windows detected camera perfectly but still EOs Utility is not detecting. Even ImageBrowser Utility detects it as Mass Storage Device and not as a Camera.
