i accidentally dropped my G12 while it was in its case/cover. It looked fine to me on the outside, so I didnt bother checking to see if it was switching on. This was a few days ago.

Today when i tried to turn it on, the lens wont extend fully and wont retract properly either. the lens curtain wont shut either cos the lens cant retract to its original place. The screen also wont light up.

I still have another 2 months for my warranty to expire but I dont know if they will fix it since I dropped it.

Please help me!

Canon will not fix this type of problem. What kind of help do you want? I think the only thing you can do at this point is send it to Canon for a repair estimate.

so there is nothing i can do? reset or anything?

how much does canon normally charge to get it looked and fixed? dont want to spend too much, if maybe i can get a new one for the price of repairs.

tried to press the play button, the green light just comes on for a sec and switches off.

===============

i recharged my battery. formatted the memory card.

the camera turns on and takes photos when the screen is not flipped outwards. it turns on and off, with lens extending/retracting.

once i flip or even rotate the screen, it shuts off and lens doesnt retract or extend.

does anyone know what that means????

Get over it, it's broken. There is not a magic button that will fix it for you. Just send it to Canon.

If there are no signs of damage on the outside I would turn it in as a warranty issue unless they can prove mis-use. I've dropped mine on a carpeted floor in the case and nothing happened. You may actually have a warranty issue and the drop may be a coincidence and not the cause. It's worth a shot.

I've dropped my G9 and G11 a few times as well, and some of those times were on concrete in the cases (thin). No problems or scratches for either one. That fact may also support the suggestion that a small bump should not disable the camera.

One thing you can try is to turn it on using the Display/Review Power-on button (instead of the normal ON button). Cycle that a few times and see what control you have if any.

With power-off, you can try some firm but reasonable whacks with the hand/palm -- in case the lens gears have been bumped by the previous dropping. Might be enough to jostel them lose. You have to guess at the axis, including front or back face.

Most likely Canon service will be able to read any error code -- such as lens won't extend. They can deduce a 'dropped camera'. And nothing wrong with honesty -- seemingly in short supply these days.

This.

Other people are offering a negative "SOL" response, however it is possible that canon can fix the camera free of charge. It has happened to myself and my cousin, both of us dropped our point and shoot cameras: powershot s5 and sd780 cameras respectively and canon fixed them free of charge.

It is YMMV however.
