12GB triple channel on my PC desktop and 16GB on my MacBook Pro. That's the max for both of them. Both are Core i7 quads. I can't really tell that much difference between them. Both work fine for my purposes. CS5/LR3
The preferences you have set in the performance settings have a lot to do with overall performance in CS5, so I'm told. Apparently they aren't really optimized for photo editing with the default settings.

Went from 3gig (2-1gig and 2-512mb) to 6gig (2-2gig and 2-1gig) last night and it made a world of difference. It was not slow enough to complain about before... but after seeing the speed improvement after adding the new... I literally sat here and giggled about how much it sped up.

16gb here. Memory prices are falling all the time. Getting the most your motherboard supports is pretty much a no brainer.

Why is that? (if you don't mind me asking)

Window 7 home premium only allows for 16GB.

Half way down where it states "Phyiscal memory limits in window 7" will show you how much RAM is allow per OS system.

My new Dell laptop only has 8 GB of RAM but it also has a 2 gig video card so I think that's one reason I don't seem to see any delays in CS6 or Lightroom 4. Though, truth be told, this is my first venture into Lightroom so I have no frame of reference.

For more than 16GB, you need the pro version of the OS.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and 8GB RAM. Running CS6 and LR4 no issues whatsoever. Upgraded from XP 1GB RAM and CS3 I notice a big difference!!!

It's not what you do, it's how you present it!

WIndows 8 allows 128GB in the cheapest version, so that might be a cheaper upgrade path than the professional W7

I know - that's why I'm spec'ing Win7 Pro for the PC I'm putting together now.

Just wondered if it was the OS or a motherboard limitation

About 8GB of RAM per core is a good rule of thumb. If you can't manage that due to hardware limitations, then as much as you can.

That's a ridiculous rule of thumb. You recommend 32 GB for regular quad core CPUs and 48 GB for some of the hexa-core CPUs then?
