sigma 70-200 2.8 question

i have the oppertunity to pick up a sigma 70-200 2.8 dg hsm for $500. The guy says its in mint condition so im thinking about picking it up...is it worth it to pick it up? is it a bad lens? good lens? someone please fill me in!!

Your signature seems to convey that you already have one. I have the f/2.8 OS HSM version and am quite happy with it.

yea my sig is wrong lol...i have a very old sigma 70-210 for film cameras i think...its just a paper weight now lol

There are different variations of the Sigma 70-200.. If what you have written down is correct- it's about correct for a used one of that model- maybe slightly better on price- (slightly )...

Given what is in your signature- it'll probably represent an upgrade. The question begs to be asked- if you could put more money out for a lens- what is the top end of what you would spend ? If you are looking at the 500'ish range- then yes- certainly. As it is a longer focal length without IS/OS- you will need to keep shutter speed up- but what did they do in the days before IS anyways... If you can swing more- considerably more- than consider other options.. But I might be tempted to try out the lens if local- and see if it is worth it when it's on the camera...

The best thing you could do- if possible- is to try it out- and transfer a few pics to a laptop- and examine them there.. If it passes for you- then go from there..

I like it, and I find the lack of OS to not be a huge deal when shooting sports---the shutter speed has to be pretty high anyways.

okay thanks for the tip everyone! A friend of mine had one and said it was a great lens...i dont mind no IS...thats why we have tripods and monopods!
