1. Is kinda boring. I don't feel any emotion or visual interest. Just a guy waiting for the jump ball. Doesn't look anxious. Doesn't look nervous. Doesn't look happy. Doesn't look mad. Just waiting. Waiting is boring.

2. IS great timing. Wish you could see someone's face. I think just getting their backs makes it a non-pic.

3. I would probably crop tighter. Wish the hand on the left wasn't there and the defender's hand on the right was lower. Looks kinda flat, almost dingy, esp on 33's back. Are you using a lot of recovery?

4. Not a great facial expression and the background isn't clean since there is a girl right behind her. Pom Pom out of the head is distracting.

5. Kinda boring. Just a huddle?

6. Just not clean enough for me. Players behind the ball carrier distract.

7. Man, those lanky arms just made you miss getting the ball in frame.

8. No faces again. Just a guy jumping high on a head fake. No real action. No emotion.

Glad you're not my editor;) Are they at least sharp? As for arms and player positions that are distracting, I'll jump on the court and try to direct traffic next time so I get a better shot. In a normal shot, those rules apply, in a sports photo, they don't IMO. Look at Presswire, AP, etc., you see that stuff all the time. Can't be helped in most cases. Do I wish the ball was completely in the frame in 7, yeah, but the fact that it's not doesn't bother me, it is what it is, he's 6 freaking 10. the focus point is on his face, couldn't raise it any higher or it hits the crowd and then I get the ball, but it's out of focus.

I think your shots are great.

DC Fan gave me about the same advice one time: always get action, the ball and a face in every published shot. Yah, I know - I also shoot the action and can't control what I get. However, I've found that by tracking the action while shooting burst shots, I get some individual shots that I would have missed with a single click.

I shoot local HS and JuCo and "publish" to the schools and players - so I don't worry much about it ... but the feedback I get is typically that they like some particular face shot, not anything about the action, or the ball, or the quality of the pic.

Thanks, I should also point out that most of the stuff I post is stuff that didn't get submitted because the stuff that is submitted has 30-day exclusivity usage attached to it.

So you only post your outtakes?

Are they at least sharp?

A couple don't look sharp, no. Maybe it is your processing or compression.

As for arms and player positions that are distracting, I'll jump on the court and try to direct traffic next time so I get a better shot.

In many cases it can't be helped. You are absolutely right. So you skip those shots unless they have something that is really compelling.

Look at Presswire, AP, etc., you see that stuff all the time.

Go look at what is published. Pick up a magazine. They publish clean shots. Not busy shots. They sure aren't publishing many backs. I am very familiar with the demands of major wire services.

Do I wish the ball was completely in the frame in 7, yeah, but the fact that it's not doesn't bother me, it is what it is, he's 6 freaking 10

I'd probably skip it. You aren't going to see a lot of people publish stuff like that.

the focus point is on his face, couldn't raise it any higher or it hits the crowd and then I get the ball, but it's out of focus.

You shot it with a 1DIV. You have more than just center focus point. If you shot it with a 5D Mark II or something, you might have a valid argument. But you shot it wrong, and even if you got the whole ball in, it is still just a pretty average jump shot pic with ref muddling your background.

DC Fan gave me about the same advice one time: always get action, the ball and a face in every published shot. Yah, I know - I also shoot the action and can't control what I get.

Exactly. FACE. BALL. You can't always control what you are going to get from the players, but you can control how you shoot something. And sometimes you have what was a great shot and one thing fouls it up for you. Luckily, each team gets ~90-something possessions.

It wasn't on the center focus point, I'm well aware there are other focus points ;) As for posting outtakes, I should just piss on the contract that I signed? Thanks for the pointers... BTW, on the front page of your website, the A&M game, you have doubles, just FYI
