Hey..I tried this lens at b&h.
the auto focus is very fast when set limit at 0.5m-infinity
I have 17-55 f2.8. I do not feel 100mm macro L focus any noticeable slower.

What body?

Taken with the 100L. The full focus throw for the 100mm macros can be slow, but if you're not going from min. focus distance to infinity, not something that's terrible to deal with.

Oops, looks like it may not have been then. I know I shot some from the shoot with the 100mm, so when I opened Bridge I just looked at all the images shot at 100mm and assumed they would have all been with the macro. What are teh chances of taking a shot on a zoom lens at exactly 100mm?

Will try and find a genuine one and post it up.

ha, easily done. I had no reason to suspect it wasn't either, I was just checking the EXIF to see which camera you'd used and noticed the lens

Yes it does seem unlikely, although I seem to remember when checking in the past that the focal lengths reported by the lens aren't infinitely variable, so it might not be as unlikely as you think (ie, there's a fairly loose range that is reported as 100mm).

that contact lens detail is amazing though

was thinking about the non-L 100mm
but yeah, i don't really do portrait type shots much so not sure if it's the lens to invest in
i do need to take some macro shots but i wanted to see how versatile the 100mm macro lens can be

Have - T2i, 18-55mm kit, 50mm 1.8, 10-22mm 3.5-4.5, 24-105mm 4.0L
WTB - 28mm 1.8 or 35mm f2, 100mm 2.8L macro lens, studio lights/strobes

Ok I'm pretty sure this one was the 100 macro, as the exif is reporting no lens detail (don't know why) but 100mm focal length.

Same as before, reduced full image with 100% crop.

Here's a crop of the other eye for comparison. I thought the two together will make it easier to compare. Looking at it, I think the focus may have been more on the left eye (camera right)
