I like #2 the best.
But put beside the #1 it clearly looks kind of pail.
But pail, near B/W photos are difficult, especially when they appear beside full color range photos.

One hint, that I am using: In stead of going full B/W on the skin, use a sephia effect, to give at tiny tint of brown. In this photo I believe that it would increase the expression.

Thanks for the tip, sir :) I was trying to fade the colors in #2 but leave the flag stuff, something like a grey/cyan conversion. I will try your technique soon!

very well done! trying to get my daughters to get one of those hats... cant pull it off.
