Thought I'd share a sample from this experiment - ran some lens calibration during the holidays, tried the Sigma 30mm on the 5D3 to see what the result looks like. The Sigma is physically compatible with the EF mount despite being designed for an EF-S crop sensor body. The corners are completely black, the image circle has an interesting vignetting effect, nicely sharp in the center where it was designed to work. This is f/1.4, 1/640 second, handheld, spot focus on red 0 after microadjusting +15. Illumination from a shoe mounted 12 LED video lamp. No post processing.

After looking at all these great pictures for the past 2hrs, I am disappointed with my copy and it's just not as sharp as it should be wider than f2.8 which is the whole reason I have this. I think I have front focus issues, and had to MF adjust to get a decent pic.

I just got this about 2 months ago, so I think I need to send it in for calibration. Any recommendations in N. California?

Even if you use the center focus point @ 1.4? Mine tend to get a little soft when using the outer focus points, but can manage to hit pretty sharp if I use the center point.

And from distances mine tends to miss a bit more frequently, so I usually use live view on my knee, or just shoot 100 shots using the center point. :P

live view and manual focus? does live view help with the autofocus also? I can't say I was aware that I could choose the focus points from using live view. Does it use whatever you left it on in manual mode?

No, I was referring to live view + manual. However, if you use the AF button while in live view it will autofocus and you can check to see if it's sharp enough. As far as focal point selection, I am not sure. I usually just use the center focus point for this lens because the edges tend to be a bit softer.

Live view and center focus using AF back button or MF gives tollerable results, but i like the veiwfinder as that is just more practical when chasing the kids around the house and that is where it has issues.

Haha, yeah most certainly. For shooting lazy dogs or still objects, I can take all the time in the world. :)
