I posted this in the lens section, but I think its appropriate here too :D

Wife and I will be going on a Mediterranean cruise in May for our 10 year anniversary, ports include Venice, Rome, and Athens among others. I can only afford to buy one lens for the trip and I'm trying to decide between a 15-85 or the 10-22 (or the sigma equivalent). I like the range the 15-85 will give me and not having to change lenses in the middle of a tour is a huge bonus. However, I'm worried that it may not be wide enough (want to capture the coliseum, vatican, and Trevi fountain and other architecture). Anyone thats been to europe I would love some advice. If I get the 10-22 I would probably take along my kit and maybe the 50 1.8. What do you guys think.

isn't this answer a stickie yet?

I am going to Italy for 16 days in January and had the same choice to make and I chose the 15-85 (rented) because of the IS and the reach. Not sure if it was the right choice but I figure the inside of these churches and Museum's that I want to see will be dim and the IS will help, and the reach will help for pics of the ceiling paintings and rooftop sculptures. That is just what I did (I am new to photography and only have the 18-135 and knew that I didn't want to risk my trips pictures on that lens with it not being to sharp on the wide end). But honestly everything I read said wider is better, but for the time of year I was going I figured I would have needed either the IS of the 15-85 or the 2.8 of the Tokina 11-16 and with that one only being 4 mm wider than the 15-85 (which I understand is huge) but really wanted some kinda reach and didn't want to have to switch lens.photos/81190407@N08/ (external link)

I took a 24-105 lens for my 40D on my Mediterranean cruise along with a Canon P&S. Heavy rains shorted out my P&S the first day. After that I only took my 40D out on nice days.
