My new 7D arrived late this afternoon. My first impression is "what a beast". It dwarfs my XSI even with the grip on the XSI. I have been reading the manual all night while I waited for the battery to charge. Any serious shooting will have to wait until the morning.

The AF seems very complicated. It will take me some time to figure it out I think. Any tips on good settings would be appreciated.

Just wanted to share my good news.....

Cheers

Kevin

Congrats! I did the same thing, upgraded from an Xsi to a 7D. You are going to have a blast! The AF is very complex indeed but start with the regular settings and go from there. The focus is much more sophisticated than the Xsi and you won't need all the bells and whistles. I only use a few of them and every single image is needle sharp. Birds in Flight, galloping horses, little kittens, storm clouds, everything.

Awesome. Last week I ordered a refurb 5DmkII and it just arrived today. My last camera was an XSi too, so I definitely understand having to get used to a lot more settings. It's amazing how much heftier the prosumer bodies like the 5D and 7D are over the Rebels. Still getting used to just holding the thing. :-)

Enjoy your new rig…

Congratulations on your early Xmas! Here's a few links to check out regarding settings, but it depends somewhat on what you're shooting, and what you're used to...

You may want to read the 5D3 Auto-focus information, just for background information. It is different than the 7D, but the literature does a much better job of explaining what the camera is doing with the different settings. Yes, I am a manual reading Geek. No, I don't own either 7D or 5D3. Just a thought.

I found these articles and videos to be helpful in dymystifying the 7D's focusing.

http://www.learn.usa.canon.com …ls/eos_7d_tutorials.shtml (external link)

Information on almost every menu setting (keep in mind a few things will have changed/added with the new 2.xxx firmware) on the 7D.
