So I've got a little bit of a dilemma. My XSi is starting to take its last breathes (won't always turn on and/or will shut off file writing a file to the card). It's pretty annoying actually. I had been planning on upgrading to a 7D after saving up a bit more but with the recent power troubles with my XSi I've thought about upgrading now. My budget suffers though and I'd be in the budget realm if a 60D. I've come across a used 50D with less than 10K on the shutter. I won't mention the price so as not to influence any decision but it is within my "60D budget".

My question.... 50D or 60D? Any thoughts? Why?

Oh yeah, I don't need video. I've had my XSi for years now and not once have thought, 'I wish I could record a video with this.'

Had the same cam as you, went to a 50D with no regrets. 99% of my shooting is wildlife though..No experience with the 60D at all other than playing with a friends for a minute. Wasn't apalled by the whole big plastic debate either, don't let that deter you if you prefer it. If you like the feel of your XSi, it should be a problem. I thought the 60D had a nice feel to it.
AF Micro is a biggie too for me. Video, not at all.

The 50D is a larger body... More prosumer, whose follow on became the 7D. The 60D is a bit smaller and closer to the size body you have now. Both are a great upgrade from what you have now.

Not to talk you out of a new camera, but do you have the latest firmware on the Xsi? If not upgrade it and you may find your problems resolved.

60D advantages
-18MP, 7D sensor handles noise slightly better at high ISO
--same LP-E6 battery as 7D, significantly better than 50D
---higher-res, articulating screen, good for odd-angled or above-head/below-waist shots
----wireless flash control
-----slightly smaller and lighter than the 50D

50D advantages
-1 more FPS than 60D, bigger buffer
--has MFA
---has joystick

Differences, may be good or bad to preference
-50D has a mag-alloy body, can be more brittle under certain conditions than poly-carb
--60D is newer technology
---60D has video capability if you ver need it
----50D uses CF cards, 60D uses SD
-----50D ~$500 used, 60D ~$600 used

I haven't tried the new firmware. To be completely honest, I don't even know where to get it. Would I just google search it? If I give it a try and it works then it can always be a second body. I really like my XSi- it's been a great camera. Thanks for the advise.

I couldn't pass up the 50D though. It was the body with original box and all cables, 2 batteries, charger, 4 GB CF card, and EF 28-135mm lens for just around $560.

Wow. That's a sick deal if it comes with the lens.

Original 2 batteries. I thought the problem might be the batteries so I tried a friends batteries and it still did it.

No love for the 28-135, huh? I'll probably use it as my general-purpose shoot around the house or family vacation lens. I don't know...we'll see. ;)

Just sayin', there are better lenses out there than the 28-134, much better. It's not that wide on the wide end for a crop and the IQ isn't that great. Your deal still puts you way ahead of market value after you've sold the 28-135. But the sooner you sell the better price you can get for it.

I won't hold it against you if you don't sell it ;) It's better than the old 17-85.
