I planned on keeping my 7D though. My wife said I can buy the 5D-3 but wanted to make sure at least some of my lenses worked still with the 5D.

What do the S lenses have that the 5D does not like I wonder? Is it the mount ?

your 50 and 100-400 boh fit the 5d3 and you're about to see just how good they really are.

The 5DIII and 600mm f4 IS were made for each other! The 600 mk 2 even more I would say, as my 600 is a heavy beast! But I lug it around anyway, and love the results!

Wow, that's a dreamy setup! I really like that they made the mk ii weigh about as much as the 500mm mk I.

That is my next question. with my gear listed below, will i see a noticeable difference in in image quality and overall image frame size between the 7d and 5d3 to make the purchase logical?

I moved from the 7D to the 5D3 and yes you will see a difference in IQ, the way colors are captured, the sharpness and noise handling are all better on the 5D3 in my opinion. you will not be able to use you EFS lenses at all.

bob

it is the mount but that can be altered. the problem is that the ef-s lenses are designed to produce an image that fills a crop sensor not a full frame sensor. so, if i understand it right when you snap a picture you have black areas surrounding the image. don't hold me to that but i think it's right. buy the kit and get the 24-105. it'll work on both bodies. it's a useful range of focal length. i've considered buying one.

That makes sense now. But I wouldnt want to modify anything. As I said, I'm going to keep the 7D and most likely use that as my wide-angle camera with the 10-22, and the kit 28-135 that came with it, and use the other EF lenses with the 5D

I upgraded from a 7D to a 5DMK3 a bit ago and I'm pretty impressed with the 5D, even for sports.

A faster burst rate would be nice but it hasn't been an issue yet.

That said, I'm shooting more sports now so I'll probably pick up a used 1DMK4 for the enhanced weatherproofing and increased burst rate. I think the 5DMK3 and 1DMK4 would compliment each other very well.

Here's a shot from last week's Oregon Civil War game. Oregon at Oregon State.

The only "sorry" part is losing the reach when compared to my 7D. But other than that, everything is better!

+1

Just finished a shoot with my 24-70 MK II, first one with the new pairing. I was amazed how close I was @ 70mm for a port. head shot.

@70 is a larger difference than @112 equiv. That I would have thought.

I have a mk2, the mk3 didnt really seem that better in performance vs price. So, I opted for the 1DX.

I can honestly say that I don;t regret not buying the mk3 over the 1DX.

Like I keep saying, if you financially can, get a 1DX, you won't regret it.

You can see it. Just press whichever button you use to focus ( I use the back button to focus ) or indeed the AF point selection button on the right of the back of the camera.

Hope this helps.

Back to the original question:

I don't regret buying the 5D3 at all. Received mine just over a month ago when it was at a price I was comfortable with. It's everything the 5D2 wasn't and more. AF points, AF system out of the 1Dx, silent mode, frame rate, extended exposure compensation, not to mention extra low light. It's ergonomics are a delight. I could really go on and on ;)

I may end up selling 5D3 and waiting for 7DII to roll out. 5D2 is fine for my people and landscape pix, and I am having an anxiety attack about selling my alt glass collection (which works perfectly with 5D2 and matte screen). I thought 5D3 would make it easier to let go of my alt glass and my 7D, but nope, it's not working out that way.

5D3 is a great all arounder, but I guess I kind of enjoy my specialized bodies for their different tasks. I also like having two camera bodies, and it's a big plus that they have same size cards, batteries, etc.

Michelle - 7D, 40 STM, 400 f/5.6, 500 f/4.5, NEX, and going Nikon FF - eager to see what 7D2 brings!
