So I am getting a used 1 Ds to try out full frame without having to spend an arm and a leg on a newer camera. Being an older camera, I was wondering if there are any limitations to the type of CF cards the camera will work with? I will be using this camera mainly for landscape/nature (and possibly some indoor "studio" shots), so speed is not a factor (especially since the camera writes slow to begin with LOL). Any input is much appreciated.

Isn't your Elan 7E full-frame? I just bought the cheapest off-brand CF card I could find for my new 5D. It works just fine.

It is as long as it has film in it! :p

I got the 1Ds to try out full frame digital, and to really see if I think it is worth the money for me to have a pro dslr in terms of all the features, and IQ compared to my 60D.

The little bit of web-searching I have done on the CF cards for the 1Ds all basically say speed doesn't matter because it writes so slow. The canon website says it can take CF I or II cards, so I'm guessing most will work for it.

You are on the right track. I had a 1Ds ten years ago and we were using a variety of cards, including the (now) slow Kingston 1Gb. Heck, you could probably shove a MicroDrive in there and it would work.

I'd pick up a middle of the road SanDisk or Lexar. No need for UDMA 7.

The 1Ds was an amazing camera for it's time... it should serve you well.

I have a 1DS and so far, I have gone as large as a Sandisk Extreme Pro 16GB card with no problems.
They are amazing cameras.

Isn't 16 GB overkill? How large are the RAW files? I thought they were only about 4-5MB

Raw files are around 10-11megabytes. I only put the 16GB in to see if it would work and secondly, I would be taking a lot of images that day and I did not want to be changing cards. In raw only mode with the 16GB , I can do around 1300 images. With saving raw and large jpeg, about 900. Not much difference than using a 32GB card in the 1DS3. I usually use 4GB cards, which allows me around 330 raw and 230 raw + large jog.

I have a feeling I will only be using my 60D for video and to get more reach for wildlife photos once I try out the 1Ds. I'm excited already and bought a CF card today while I was out running errands! :D

It's true that a slow card will be fast enough for the camera, but it will take FOREVER to get the images to your pc... Especially when you take many hundreds of astro photos... :(

That was one of the reasons for the fast cards - upload to the computer time. After the cards, I ended up with a USB3 card reader from Lexar. Things are all right now! Estimate the USB3 reader to be 10-15 times faster than my old USB2. Makes a lot of difference when the download amount is a few gigabytes!

The RAW files are around 10MB each. I noticed that 1 megapixel = 1MB more or less depending on ISO speed.

Get a middle of the road Sandisk Ultra 30MB/s card because of the cheap price that they're being sold for.
The camera's buffer speed is REALLY slow. Slower than the 1D.
