So if you go with definition 1 then it is ONLY hot shoe mountable speedlights and ONLY off camera. I will take note and only post appropriately. Thank you for clarifying.

There is no real definition.. But to me it at least means using a flash "off camera"..

I always thought it was generally off-camera lighting as well. I don't think strobing has to be with "cheap" speedlights. Just no pop-up flash. lol

But to me it means that who ever is using the term is new to flash photography.

Edit: I had no idea there was also an Australian Strobist http://www.strobist.com.au/ (external link)

Can someone recommend a reliable budget flash/speedlite that is compatible with an original Canon 580EX speedlite and a 7D?

Here's my latest light setup/shot.

Picture taken on a Canon 7D with a Canon L-series 17-40mm lens.

Lighting is:

2 x Nikon SB24 speedlights on 1/2 power positioned at the side and rear 3/4 of the car.
1 x Nikon SB80DX speedlight on 1/2 power positioned to the left of the camera/front of the car (mounted higher with more angle than the two on the right side)
1 x Neweer TT520 on full power positioned on the fence (you can see if fire in the picture) mainly to make the car stand out a bit more against the darker background.

All triggered using cheapo eBay triggers - in fact the Neweer TT520 (very cheap off Amazon) was in 'slave' mode.

Setup shot:

You can't see the flash firing underneath the car here, but there is a flash on the ground firing towards the camera.
