You won't find worse light at a night game than Elmer Gray Stadium at Abilene Christian University, where my son's high school team plays home games. ACU uses it for track, and most of the lights are aimed at the track. Half of the lights have been burned out this year, and they haven't replaced them yet. I guess since it's not track season yet. Anyway, it's made for horrible shooting conditions.
I still like the endzone shots, but it's REALLY hard. I've found that laying down on the ground and shooting up at the action is best. I like that perspective, no matter what the light is like. But getting the dark sky in the background helps make the poorly-lit players stand out better.
This was ISO 12800, f/2.8 and 1/250. Pushing it too the max trying to get a shot. Not great, but under the conditions it came out way better than I expected. It is almost dark out there.
