Sometimes when you mess up it turns out kinda cool anyway. I somehow turned my dial to a custom setting I have set up for night football. The sun was still up during pregame warmup yesterday, and this is what I got. I started to delete it, but I thought, "Why not?" and kept it. :D

#25 and #27 are apparently spitters.

The sunset sky made for a cool backdrop. Here's a series that worked out good under the colorful sky.

My sons youth football team. Shot with a friends Nikon. I own a Rebel 350D but only have the kit lens. Looking for recommendations on a good 200mm for the 350 to get this kind of shot. First post on here...please be nice. :D

Me? Usually only for crowd shots or sideline shots of the players. I do very little of the actual game with the 135. Mostly use the 300 f/4. Crank the ISO to 6400, about 1/400 to 1/500 on shutter, and wide open at f/4.

Hmm. Looks like you have pretty good light then. I wouldnt have figured that those night shots were done at f4. Nice.

Welcome to the forum.

For youth football during the daylight, especially assuming budget is a factor, the Canon 55-250 is very suitable for shots like that.

Middle of the field, yes. Towards the sidelines, and especially the endzones, it gets a little dark. Definitely hope they upgrade the lights soon. It would help a ton, but thanks. :D

from the 20 in you can basically forget a lot of shots
unless your at a university of some size or a pro game
I usually stay between the GL and the 10
gl for run plays
10 or so for the pass routes especially the flag routs or fades
Most fields your wasting time on the end line
UNless you got 8k or more in equip
or your the guy from Poland
I still cant figure out how he does it with a 50D ::)

You won't find worse light at a night game than Elmer Gray Stadium at Abilene Christian University, where my son's high school team plays home games. ACU uses it for track, and most of the lights are aimed at the track. Half of the lights have been burned out this year, and they haven't replaced them yet. I guess since it's not track season yet. Anyway, it's made for horrible shooting conditions.

I still like the endzone shots, but it's REALLY hard. I've found that laying down on the ground and shooting up at the action is best. I like that perspective, no matter what the light is like. But getting the dark sky in the background helps make the poorly-lit players stand out better.

This was ISO 12800, f/2.8 and 1/250. Pushing it too the max trying to get a shot. Not great, but under the conditions it came out way better than I expected. It is almost dark out there.

pixel, for those settings, the light must be horrible. Wow. Good picture, for sure, considering the conditions.

"Horrible" is too kind when describing the light out there at night. :D
