Definitely an insect (midge or something similar) caught by the flash. As it continued flying upwards after the flash went off, it has caused a dark "shadow" where it obscured the light from the sky (the shutter exposure being longer than the flash duration).

At a guess I would say some sort of balloon if only from the way it appears to be floating.

If it were a balloon, it would've been there in the before and after shots, which he has already said, wasn't.
It's weird, even if it is a bug. :)

I would frame that shot, 'just because', it is one of the strangest things I have seen in the forum... period.

I'll be dang, now THAT is something that I thought I'd never see, it's still VERY weird, but it's good that you cracked the case.
