Well, I just came across a 1.6TC, my amateur mind is probably misreading something, can anyone explain?

I think that is for video based on the XL designation. Nikon has 1.7X tc's.

If Canon made a 1.6 tc that was as good as it's 1.4 tc, I'd be all over that, at any price!

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

The light loss would be painful.. on an f/4 lens on non-1D series bodies, you would be at f/6.3. On an f/5.6 lens on the 1D series, you would be at f/9.. screwing up AF in both scenarios. That extra 1/3 stop loss, might not be worth it. It might be nicer on an f/2.8 lens though.

While I have never used Nikon's 1.7X TC I must admit I do very much wish Canon made one of their own. Is doubtful the market is there for such a TC but that said for my specific shooting patterns it would be at times most useful. A 400mm F2.8 would provide 560mm F4, 680mm F4.8 800mm F5.6 with AF. I presently am using a 300 F2.8 IS lens almost exclusively with a 2X TC attached with very good results.

The 400mm F2.8 would have potential to go to 1120mm F8 stacking TC's or with 1.7X stacked with 1.4 one would be at 952mm.

For me it is the 680mm F4.8 that is the draw f the 1.7X TC to fill the gap between 560mm and 800mm. I do a lot of bird shots between 15 and 24 feet.

While TC's do affect AF speed and IQ not everyone has the $ or python arms to tote around 3 big primes. Having a full range of TC's could be very beneficial for some... like me :)
