As the owner of the lens, I can 100% confirm that I DID attach a Kenko Pro DGx 1.4x TC to the glass... That way Chris has a little bit more reach with the cropped 50D he was using... Anyhoo... I hope that settles things...

I was shooting with a 70-200 on one body and the 400 on another. Since I was sitting on my butt and since the 70-200 was my primary lens, I just hand hold the 400. I normally only shoot the opposite end of the court.

Now for field sports, yeah, I use a monopod.
