Canon is being ambiguous because it really doesn't want your to know that as long as there is a USA warranty, they HAVE TO HONOR it regardless of where you sourced your gear... there is a law that says they must honor that USA warranty ....

If they didn't make it sound like "Authorized" was the only way to go, they couldn't entice dealers into becoming "Authorized" by having them buy more products either in quantity or dollar amount...

By calling for "Authorized" dealers as YOUR source they are helping to advertise for them, this giving them some return on their investment in inventory ......

I'm not doubting they will honor the warranty, but can you please quote the federal law or give some indication of where to find it?

This was a good thread, I'm considering my first purchase from an unauthorized source.

Yay my body is repaired and is being shipped back to me. I'm not going crazy after all. Seems AF was way out of wack and needed an "electrical adjustment". No charge to me is now confirmed.

It has been shown through case law that manufactures can limit warranty coverage on gray market products and those sold by unauthorized dealers.

Again, I'm not saying Canon won't or shouldn't accept warranty claims on unauthorized dealer merchandise, just that case law does indeed support the legality of denying the warranty.

I know the poll is over, but thought I'd add my experience here for anyone interested. I just sent in my 5d Mark III for warranty (part of the $2499 deal from BigValueInc). My camera had communication problems with the battery and would not display the battery level left. It was intermittent and would come and go. I sent in my camera for warranty with my receipt from BigValueInc (included the warranty card too just in case although they only requested one or the other). Camera got to Canon Irvine Monday and arrived back to me today fixed under 1-year warranty. They said something with the power was disconnected. They also did some other electrical adjustments, inspection, and cleaned the camera and sensor. For a second before I checked the serial number I thought they sent me a different camera because the camera looked even more brand new than before, lol. So I'm very happy and got a great deal on the camera. Canon customer service has never let me down.

edited to add- oh and they also changed something so that all the focus points that are not selected dissapear when i hold the shutter button halfway down...been trying to figure out how to do that for ages. All the extra points before bugged me!

There is setting for that. If you are missing them, you can bring them back.. :)
Can't imagine composing a shot with the 61 boxes dangling in front of you...
