For the first time ever I'm actually tempted to try Bill Me Later. This is a sweet deal indeed. *Must resist.*

Potential buyers should read their eBay feedback since they tend to ship 10-14 days late and sometimes cancel orders without notice if you're expecting to receive your cameras as promised.

I can share with personal experience that this seller will NOT ship within 1 business day as it states on the auction. They will take their sweet time to ship it so don't be in too much of a hurry to get the camera.

In terms of the "duties" statement that I made regarding shipping to canada,I meant to say Brokerage. These companies, if they do ship to canada, always ship with fedex or ups just because of the high cost of the item. Both of these shipping methods will result in high brokerage fees being levied by the shipping company.

Keep that in mind if you do decide to get it shipped over the border. No duties but for sure taxes and brokerage.

I purchased from them on a Friday and they did not ship it until the following Tuesday. Everything else went well, including a warranty card in the box.

There is a common myth & misconception that all FedEx and UPS shipments to Canada incur high brokerage.

In fact, only ONE type of FedEx and UPS shipment incurs high brokerage: FedEx Ground or UPS Standard (Ground), which would be $80.85 for a 5D Mark III, on top of your local sales tax.

All of the other shipment methods, UPS Worldwide Expedited, UPS Worldwide Saver, UPS Express, FedEx International Economy, FedEx International Priority, etc, have no large brokerage fees (except a small $10 bond fee, and a line item fee if you're importing >5 different classifications of items in the same package).

The best camera stores won't ship FedEx Ground or UPS Standard to Canada, as they know it incurs high brokerage fees (and pisses the customer off). B&H, Adorama, Beach Camera, and BuyDig's UPS and FedEx options are the more expensive but brokerage-inclusive methods. Of course, it pays to know and ask for the right class of shipping, especially with stores or sellers that don't have much experience shipping to Canada. Some will even ship USPS if you ask nicely. A $20-25 shipping upgrade can result in a large savings of brokerage fees.

If I buy this, living in Europe, do I get to claim warranty from Canon in Europe? Or do I need to ship the camera to the US in case of a problem?

According to their listing, the camera only comes with the Canada/US warranty. Not too sure if you can claim any warranty services in Europe for a North American Camera.

Unfortunatly, I have had different experiences with UPS Expedited. I've had car parts shipped from Japan to Toronto using that very same method and there were brokerage fees on top of the taxes that I had to pay on my account.

Not sure if this is different with photographic equipment tho?

There's a 6% duty on auto parts. (Which results from the Canadian government trying to protect the local auto part industry.)

In summary there are 3 things you pay, and don't confuse Brokerage Fees with Duties.

  1. Sales Tax, to the Canadian/provincial government. You can't avoid this.
  2. Duty, to the Canadian government, which depends on the item you're shipping (0% for cameras and lenses). If your item is not duty-free, you can't avoid this. Items manufactured in the US or Mexico are always duty-free, by NAFTA.
  3. Brokerage Fees, to the courier, for the effort of clearing your parcel through customs, and can be avoided through careful choice of carrier.

You can read our article (external link) for the details.

Bummer. Well, at least I have low expectations given the challenges others have faced with this vendor.
