I got out to shoot a few of the local big cyclocross events this Fall. Cyclocross is always a blast to shoot. The looniness of the culture is surpassed only by the degree to which the racers seem to relish the grit and punishment of the sport.

On the looney culture side of things, you can't beat the Halloween Cross Crusades.

Some of the costumes look like they would affect race performance but the non-costumed racers received merciless heckling from the crowd.

---------------

This last weekend wrapped up the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross series here in Bend.

Conditions ranged from Frozen to muddy. As it should be.

Backstory on the cupcakes from today's newspaper:

"It's not just the win, it was the atmosphere along the course that was spectacular," (Katerina) Nash said in reference to the scores of cheering spectators who line much of the course circuit. "I mean, having so many people just yelling at me, 'Happy Birthday!' and then having all the cupcakes along the way and a cake at the finish...it's quite overwhelming and it really shows what a great family cyclocross fans are."

Here's Katerina Nash leading the Women's Elite class

Thanks!

It's a sport with so much variety, I try to approach each race with different goals, whether those goals are creative or documentary. There's always a lot to experiment with and it's so spectator/photographer friendly.

Thanks Rick. The interaction between the racers and spectators is always fun and I was lucky to catch some of the birthday festivities.

The guys in the back at the races here get beer handoffs on each lap. Mainly in the 4/5's.
