I'd say the Sigma is a better lense then the Canon if the person behind the Sigma is better at what they do behind the camera.

That's a point many fail to realize (myself included).

Here's the ISO comparisons between the two... complements of thedigitalpicture ;) They seem to be pretty close, in this comparison, with the slight edge going to the Canon 35L. Of course not to mention build quality, AF accuracy, weather resistance,etc......

is the sigma not sharper than the canon as per this comparison. I am stuck on the place order page/button at Amazon - the 35 sigma is not in stock and the canon is close to 400 usd premium. Last three days its been like this :o

How is the test showing that the 35L is better?

Rick,
We all play the lottery when we buy gear, from any brand.

bads,
I don't understand your point, you are saying that the Sigma is only a great lens if they person using it is great with it? if that's your point, same applies to Canon.

I am a Canon user, and don't think that will ever go to Nikon or any other brand, but I can also understand that Canon is not, in this case, the winner between the two 35mm.

Yep, I've been through I don't know how many lenses on three or four different canon bodies, and every combo has been dead on in terms of autofocus. The One time I buy a sigma....thank god for amazon's return policy!
So you will pay more for the 35L used even knowing that the Sigma is a better lens?
i'll pay more for the 35 f2 IS. the 35L is sharp at f2 and doesn't have IS.

I am not trying to clown anyone, I am a Canon user too, and by the way, backfocus is not a issue strange to Canon
