I've come to terms with the 50 and 100-400 being they're not going to get replaced in my lifetime. I'll believe it when I see it.

Well, they just released a 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm update, so I'd say it's a bit more likely this time.

This would be the first IS lens with an aperture wider than f/2. I shudder to think of the price increase...

I'd say $900 sounds reasonable.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

With both newer stories rated "CR2". Like I said, I'll believe it when I see it.

Another affordable prime lens sacrificed on the video alter.

I'm going to buy a 28mm/1.8 next month before they kill that one too.

Haha, ouch! Good call...this guy's "CR2" rating doesn't mean a whole lot...

To be fair, only the 2009 postings mentioned any timing at all, which was incorrect. The 2009 rumor does, however, mention IS. The other two mention testing of prototypes, including build upgrades, optical upgrades, and USM, all of which match the upgrades of the other primes that we've seen recently. It is entirely believable to me that the prototype for whatever lens is ultimately announced (in 2013?) has existed since 2009. In the 2010 and 2011 postings, CR specifically stated that no release timetable was known. Just because a rumor is posted there and no product comes to market within a few months doesn't mean that CR got it wrong, it just means that the source may be giving information about products that are further out than the CR audience may expect. It is impossible to know what factors within the company affect timing of product releases. Cut the guy a break. If reading his website makes you frustrated, don't read it.

Please note that the original source doesn't give such ratings ;-)a

Whilst still a rumour, it's actually one of the ones I'd put a small each way bet on.

If maintaining rumour pages since 2004 has taught me anything, it's that 'reliability' ratings are pretty meaningless much more than a month or so out from any announcement. I've been updating many of the pages of late, and it's really showed up how much Canon (and others) have tightened up leakage rates :-(

bye for now

I have been predicting this every month since 2006, and I'm 100% certain I'll be right (eventually).

So I know you guys are poking fun at CR, but do you really not think there's more of a chance considering they seem to be refreshing their non-L primes?

there's a chance but I don't how if there is a lot of demand for a 50mm prime with IS, the non-IS version seems to work fine for many people
