You may be right - I assumed a meteor as I was there to shoot the shower. I was the only one there and facing the camera so not sure of its speed etc. It was cool to see as I sorted through the pics though.

Took over a hundred shots, only captured one early in the evening. I changed the ISO from 3200 to 1600, to reduce some of the ambient light, and that killed any further captures. I didn't realize it until I looked this morning. Oh well, a learning experience.

I took a stab at some meteors. Never did night stuff before and that pesky infinity on the 17-40…I figured you twisted focus ring to the extreme…not so, evidently. Anyways, here is one of my better crappy ones. I figured out focus a little later, but clouds rolled in.

I did 30 second f/8 at 17mm and iso 400 every one minute. I am going to play around some more with night photography. It's pretty cool! I liked watching the stars and clouds move as i went through my pics...

The clouds have cleared a bit so I am going to try this tonight.

Can you gurus PLEASE tell me what the best settings/method for capturing meteor showers is!!! All I know is find a dark place and bring a tripod :)

When it comes to the cosmos, I have no clue about F-Stop, timing, filters, focus, etc!

My gear is in my signature, and I am usually armed with the 5D2/24-70 .... is that ok? What should I take instead, or additionally?

Thanks in advance, and happy shooting to all!!!

Regards ..

How is it that here in Canmore we had complete cloud cover, yet 10 minutes down the road you had clear sky!

It was far from clear though. Clouds kept rolling through the whole time. There were breaks every now and then that were lucky enough to coincide with a meteor or two.

This is the album of keepers. (external link) I got too cold and bailed around 1am.

Here in Tehachapi its been raining with snow in the near future. It won't clear up before the shower peak is over. :(

I am enjoying looking at all of your pictures, everybody. These are great!

This is from about 350 photos, taken at 6 seconds each. Captured a few goodies in there...

Took this last night. might be a little guy near the tree line but kinda hard to see. I didn't even know there was a meter shower till after I got home. Might go back out tonight to a different location.

Fred,

Your setup, 5D2 w/ 24-70 is perfect for this. I'd leave it on 24mm, to capture as much sky as possible. As you can see, by reading through this thread, settings are widely varied, and really it's whatever makes you happy. I use, f5.0, ISO 1600, 30 second exposure. But please experiment, you'll quickly find what works best for you.

For focus, I set my lens a tad shy of infinity, but I can also zoom in on the display to 10x, and fine tune it there. It takes a little practice to do, but not very difficult. Dress warmly, take a chair to sit on, and have a grand time.

I'm soo happy to see everyone's pictures. They're really fun to make and well done.

I managed to only get this faint one. I saw a couple last night, but wasn't able to get it on camera. Thought I got a couple, but those turned out to by planes flying by.
