Thinking of making a switch. I use cybersyncs and a commander now but im having trouble syncing the commander to match the readings of my L358 meter.

Im wondering if i should just go with pocket wizards and leave the headaches behind.

Any thoughts??

Hi,

I'm a absolute beginner with off-camera flash, but for what it's worth, I picked up the Phottix Odin triggers (1 transmitter and 2 receivers) and I'm using them with 2 430EX II's.

I just opened this stuff tonight, literally, and in the space of two hours I feel like I've already got a fairly good understanding of how they work. In fact, I'm already thinking of getting another flash and receiver to try out some of the other things that I've been reading about.

Setting groups is real easy, and then you can change between TTL and Manual; adjust either EV or power separately for each flash; turn individual flash firing off or on; and do all this just using the transmitter on the camera. I can also hear the flash zooms doing their thing as well; all by themselves!

I can't give you a comparison against any others, but if I can get these Odins doing all this right out of the box then I can say that anyone can use them. Since you've already been using something similar, I imagine you would be up to speed on these within minutes.

I checked out a lot of reviews about these before buying, and I'm quite happy with their build quality and how easy they are to use.

Good luck with your decision.

Dale

I'm not sure about the CyberCommander, but I know the L-358 can dial in compensation [It's in the manual]... it's generally done to match the camera that's being used, but I don't know why it couldn't also be done to match your CyberCommander.

That said, I'm curious to know... why are you still using the L-358 when you have a CyberCommander?

I use manual exposure settings on the copy machine

Have you considered the latest Yongnuo YN-622C transceivers. Have a look at the following ....

WE have some similar equipment and I have just bought 4 of these as they are far cheaper than PW.

Im using the L358 because the meter reading on the commander is so far off its not funny.
The L358 seems to be very close as far as exposure goes

I use Yungnuo YN-622C triggers. They are much cheaper than pocket wizards and offer the same functionality. They offer ETTL and HSS. You will spend 200 bucks for four... compared to 200 for a single PW. You should have a look ;)

Pocketwizard plus II's are $140 new. You can pick up used ones for around $100 ea.

Note that they don't do TTL, you can't use a on-camera flash with them, and they have interference problems with Canon flashes. You have to put a special sock over Canon flashes to get PW's to work relaibly with the them.

I was ready to shell out the big bucks for a transmitter and three flash PW setup, until I considered all of the above... I could not justify premium price for buggy technology.

I got four YN 622's for $170. I used the money I saved for another flash and some other accessories.

Hmm... I don't have one, have never used one, but I know there are members on this board who have them and I don't recall hearing anything about them being off...

On the other hand, I don't recall you saying anything about your triggers not firing, but a number of suggestions for buying new ones... not sure why ;)

Yes, AB800 and higher. Search the main YN-622C thread for more detail.

That's the PW tt1/tt5, not the Plus(II) AFAIK…

Yeah, those are the ones that do TTL. So if you want TTL with PW's, you have interference. Bottom line is that you can't get TTL and interference free operation (without a sock on the flash) with premium priced PW's.

If I was going with a premium priced option, and I didn't want on-camera flash capability, I would go with the Odins. I like the Odin features better than PW's anyway, but you don't get on-camera capability with the Odins.

You get TTL, no interference, and on-camera flash capability with cheap YN 622's.
