I live in SE Asia, so a humidity controlled unit is the best bet for me.

For mold, you need damp, dark, and moist. Without one of those, mold can't grow.

I keep all my gear in this bag

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …EU_Pro_Runner_450_AW.html (external link)

I only use it for at home storage, never take it out as it is way too heavy to carry when loaded up. You obviously could get any of the large backpacks that are available from so many different manafacturers, does not have to be this model.

And inside it I always keep one of these

Way cheaper over time than buying silica packets in my opinion. However silicia packets are alot smaller.

ive got a bunch of extra camera bags so i just put the stuff im not using in a bag or two and then put i in the closet.

+1

Unless you live in a green house or something, the climate you are comfortable living in should be fine for your camera gear. I wouldn't store it on the floor of a damp basement, or in an attic that hits 100 degrees plus in the summer. Mine is in a closet on the first floor of our house. I have insurance for if someone steals it.

in plastic containers with desiccants/silica gel packets - large plastic containers are easily available for 6-10 USD each at Target/Walmart etc.

Something like this for the large lenses (with silica gels inside) - when you want to go out and shoot just grab the gear and go.

I've got a number of camera backpacks that I use. I switch gear between and amongst them and take what I want out with me in other bags.

Wish I had a safe though, as I just had a five gallon water jar I used for coins disappear from my house. :-(

One shoulder bag with "normal" cameras and lenses ready to go. Spare shoulder bag for "lighting" with flash units, flash power packs, stroboframes, pocketwizards etc. One backpack "field" telephoto and field items, box with "power" eneloops and chargers.

Can someone please comment on the use of silica gel packs? Do you use 2 or 3 "larger" packs, or 10-12 "smaller" packs? Does it matter? Best place to buy? (I see many choices on Amazon.)

I have two in my Pelican 1610, they have a sight window that lets you know when it needs reactivated.
