can you open the lens form the camera body, look into the light (both lens caps open) and change the aperture value - might be a stuck/loose aperture blade that's causing this.

What do you mean?
I can look directly threw the lense and zoom it in and out and it clicks but I cant see the blades.. IDK how to do what you are referring to?

don't you see the aperture close down or open up when you see through the lens and adjust the aperture?

Its 2.8 across the entire focal length. SO no matter what zoom you are the aperture dosnt change unless you change it on the camera. So zooming past 28mm wouldnt have any effect on the aperture right?

hell....!!! can you close the aperture and see please....its constant 2.8 yes but cant you change the aperture and see if the problem persists - I am asking you to see if the problem is persisting at all apertures.

Else the lens needs a trip to the canon SC.

If it's "clicking" when zoomed, it probably has nothing to do with the aperture.

You can't change the aperture with the lens off the camera, anyway. The only way to test the aperture is by setting it to something smaller than the max (f2.8 in this case), and using the depth of field preview button on the camera to stop the lens down. If you remove the lens while holding the DOF button, it will remain stopped down.

However, I doubt that messing with the aperture will effect the clicking noise one way or another. The aperture and zoom mechanisms are two separate things. More likely, there is grit or something loose in the zoom mechanism. I'd send it to Canon to be checked. Or, if it's no longer in warranty, take it to a local camera repair tech, if you can find a good one.

There is no aperture ring so I think it wouldn't be that easy to change electronically controlled aperture with the lens off the body...

it is possible to change aperture holding DOF preview button and disconnecting the lens. Please read up.

What's the warranty on one of these? How do I contact canon about this and set it up?
do they send a postmarked shipping box? Or will I have to have it shipped myself?

I have never delt with this before so sorry if these are dumb questions

you have to call Canon - end up probably sending it to Canon NJ. I think its one way shipping - do get insurance while shipping.

Mine had such a "click" when I received it new. Sent to Canon, came back with no click. :)

This is not a normal to be heard from this lens,
when zooming in/out should be smooth and no sound
